Those w/ Vortec Heads and 1.6 rockers...inside please
When you put on the Vortec heads and 1.6 roller rockers, did you have to increase the length of the pushrod slot in the heads to prevent the pushrod from hitting the head?
According to the March 2004 Car Craft magazine, page 67...they say that this must be done.
This confuses me because the Ram Jet 350 crate motor comes with stock vortec heads and 1.6 roller rockers. Maybe GM had to modify the heads for pushrod clearance?
What's your experience? Also, any modifications necessary to the rockers themselves?

Depends (doesn't it always?) I think the reason they didn't have to on the crate motor is the low lift numbers. I haven't tried it yet but won't be using anything over .510 lift.

Ive bene using the gold 1.6s with no push rod clereance problems. ZZ4 cam with 1.6s is .505 on intake and .544 on exaust. However those z28 springs good to supposibly .570 lift sounded like they were colapsing on me (#8 cylinder) when i had the 1.6s on the exaust side. So I took those off and no more noise (well no more bad noise ) so .505 on intake and .510 on exaust 4 me. But to answer ur question NO i have had no problems.

Just finished putting my new Vortec headed engine in my truck.
1.5 rockers, comp roller lifters (link bar, not OEM style) and I had to grind the heck out of the pushrod slots.
I have a feeling there are various casting "styles" that GM has used...I don't think my setup should have required any grinding myself.

I bought my Alum Vortec Head in 02', 1.5 rockers no clearance problems, builder said 1.6s would have worked also.

I'm about one week away from finding out myself!
I spoke to a tech rep from Scroggs and Dickey and he told me that with the vortec heads and intake and 1.6 rockers that I will NOT have to change pushrod length. I hope this is right because I just ordered the new pushrods today. (stock length) I will be using the LT4 hot cam with this combo. When it is all said and done I will post my results along with some pics of the process.
