Cam Options for Super Ram 383

I have the LPE 219 right now but since my engine is being rebuilt my builder actually suggested a larger cam. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at the TPIS cams, but the prices are ridiculous. The rest of my setup is in my signature.

Lots of carnage unfortunately. Two bent pushrods, broken piston skirt, all bearings worn to the copper or brass or whatever the gold layer is, possible bent valve.

I have a feeling a large part is due to poor machine work. My line bore was found to be out by 2 and a half thousandths and never cut. My new engine builder says that the max should be 1 and a half. Also my pistons were not stroker pistons but regular ones and my machinist assured me that cutting the skirts would be ok instead of getting the correct ones. Well guess what....I had one break on me! Hopefully they will refund ALL of my money without me taking legal action.

I'm using a comp cam custom roller, .495"I and .502"E lift at 050 with 1.5 roller rockers (I'm running 1.6), 218I and 224E duration at 050, 112LSA on my 10.5 compression 383 SuperRam.

Any output numbers with that cam? 1/4 mile times? Just trying to get an idea here of if it's worth almost $400 for a cam bigger than the 219.

Only Desktop Dyno (which Comp Cams said should be fairly close in this case) so far. Only 500 miles on motor so far and we're still tuning the prom. Sorry.

For what it's worth, DD says with my Dart Sportsman II measured air flow numbers, 10.5 compression, headers, and 1000CFM, it would be 436HP @ 5000RPM and 512TQ @ 3500RPM. Probably a little high, but also high enough to be able to lose a little and still be plenty high enough. IMO anyway.

Good place for a cam is Reed Cams. Custom grind cost me just under 200. Took 3 days from the time I placed the order to the time it was at my front door.

Paul,

I agree to go ahead with a SR cam if you can afford it. Call Comp and have them grind you one like that TPIS one. You deserve to have a mean *** motor for the crap you're going through. If I had to do it again, I'd have swapped to a SR instead of using the ZZX, just cause I know I'm losing prob. 20hp from running a HR. Glad to hear you found out what was causing your power loss, even though it sucks, I know you at least feel relieved in a way.
Good luck.

Joe

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to talk to the engine builder today and see what he suggests also. I just don't know if I can swing another $400 for a cam, although I can probably sell the 219 for almost $200 since it's only got 1,000 miles on it.
I should finally have the engine back next week and I'm figuring 2 or 3 weekends to get it all buttoned back up and running.

Good advice in this thread. If you can swing it Paul, I'd go solid roller or the ZZ-X like these guys said. Seems like a mismatch to a SuperRam, but it works and they put down the #'s. Good luck with whatever you choose Paul.

Camarojoe, nice dyno numbers, no track times yet?

With the AFR heads and SR, definately go with a single pattern grind.

Save yourself some money and go to Comp over TPIS.

I can get you a good price on a cam. Email me if interested.

My choice would be a HR 230/230@ .050, with a mid .500 lift ground on a 112lsa =2 degs advance.

Or if you want to go the solid roller route, a 236/236 will work well.

Ok nevermind on the cam swap. After speaking with my engine builder again today he told me he actually thought the cam was too big. He was afraid it would kill my low end power. I assured him that the 219 with Super Ram would have plenty of low end power if it was all dialed in correctly.

The only thing I'm not sure on is his suggestion to stick with 1.5 rockers instead of 1.6.....he thinks with 1.6 I'll be running too much lift and 1.5 is just below what he would see as optimal. I trust his judgement on this one though....the guy builds 360 and 410 sprint car motors for a living as well as a number of other high powered combos.

Thanks for all the advice though guys....I'll keep it in my mind for further projects.
