hard starting 5.7TPI
I bought an 87 IROC today with the 5.7 TPI, the car has a new fuel pump and fuel relay, but you have to wind it longer than I feel is necessary to start it, once it starts it runs good. But it is just hard to start. Any ideas?

I'd run a fuel pressure test just to make sure it wasn't pump related. If the filter hasn't been replaced I'd also do that. Since you just bought the car you really don't have a clue as to the maintenance thats been done. I'd also do a complete tune up as well. I know these things are just minor, but they need to be eliminated. Remember its a 87 and this is 04, I'd venture and say that the injectors are pretty dirty by now and in need of a good cleaning. The 87 also used a cold start injector to add fuel during starting. While you at it put a scan tool on it and pull the codes to see if there's a problem.
This should get you started for now, any questions or problems don't hesitate and ask.

I have the same problem with my 89. I'm starting to think it's oil getting on the plugs from worn valve seals. Do you see any smoke come out after the extended start time adn the car is idleing?
I have brand new injectors, new pump and filter, recent plugs, cap, wires, ignition coil, distributor, and new injectors.
I switched to 10w30 Mobil 1 synth from 5w30 and no change. I pulled two of the plugs and one of the especially seems to be covered in oil. 200,000kms on the clock. Runs really good otherwise. Should I bother with valve seal replacement?

Before you go and spend the money on valve seals you need to first run a diagnostic compression test on all the cylinders. This will determine if it's the seals, rings or even a leaking head gasket. Only after this is completed will you have enought info to do the job correctly the first time. Remember, it's cheaper to do it right once than to half do it twice. (IMO)
