voltage on double radiator fans?

i have a 1989 firebird formula, with a 305 tpi in it... it has a double fan on the radiator, and the drivers side fan is always on when the car is on. however the 2nd fan i think is only supposed to go on when the car overheats, yet it stopped going on recently.... i just wanted to know, how many volts does the secondary fan take to work? is it 12? because i hooked it up to a switch, getting power from my fuse box in the accessory under the radio one that i put in recently. is this too many volts to be pumping into the fan? will i burn out a switch or the fan motor by doing this??? if anyone has tried this or has any info on it, let me know... thanks
