Where on the engine can I find out what year it is?

The 89 Firebird (Formula) I am planning on buying has a late 80's 5.7 Vette motor installed to replace the original 5.0. My friend who I am buying it from doesn't remember what year the Vette was that it came from, so I am wondering where I can find out that information. I thought I heard somewhere that it should be stamped on the block somewhere, or something to that effect. it'd be nice to know exactly what motor I have installed and the year. ...you know, just in case I want maybe mod it for a fiew more ponis or something

Anyway, let me know what other info you need and thanks for the help

If the back of the motor is visible, I believe the numbers are on the drivers side near the head. Or just crawl under the driver side and stamped on the side of the motor should be the last three digits of the casting numbers. Then do a search for the number at Mortec. If you can't find them on Mortec, post the numbers here, and I or anybody else might be able to find it.
