tpi cam selection

hey people. first time signing on & checking out the site. let me ask my question. i have an 89 firebird, 350, 9.5:1 comp, vortech heads, sdpc tpi baseplate, 24lb ford injectors, custom prom chip, edelbrock tes headers, 2400 stall converter-700 trans, 3.73:1 rear gears, also using lt4 hotcam with 1.5 roller rockers. is this cam combo too much? the car has a very lumpy idle & i think i should be able to squeeze more & smoother power from this combo if i selected a different cam. any suggestions? thanks.

Welcome to TGO!!!

...are you still using the long tube set-up? I don't think the long tube runners can flow enough air in the upper RPM's which is where the hotcam makes power.

I'd say the cam should be fine, assuming you can feed it the air it needs. Lots of guys are running mild 350's with the LT4 Hotcam.

Do a search for "hotcam". TONS of info!

you could try the zz4 cam. it's a dual pattern cam which the tpi likes, it makes most of it's power down low which will compliment the tpi setup you have. I had it in my car with the tpi setup and it idled nice and pulled hard down low. Tuning with it was the easiest i've seen with any cam yet. I only switched to the hotcam because it compliements the stealthram i'm running.

had the zz4, went to the LPE 219/219. probably the best or very close to optimum with the modified LTR. They are selling these on thier website and on ebay for 250 bucks. really a great deal. are you running any intake mods other than the base plate?

P.S. do a search for my user name here on thirdgen, I had started a really good thread on TPI cam selection.

Mike, how was the idle on the ZZ4 compared to LPE 219/219? Also were you running 1.6 rockers on the ZZ4? Thanks, Allen
