ok, so the SES light came on today while i was driving. i pulled the code when i got home and it came up 32. i did a search and found that this was a malfunction with the EGR. is this correct?

This code gets incorrectly set all the time. The computer monitors the operation of the egr by looking for a temp change at the valve when it is instructing it to open. If it doesn't see one the code gets set. A quick thing to check would be motion of the egr valve while engine is at temp and the rpms are fluctuating from idle to about 1000 rpm above idle. A small dentist like mirror is one of the only ways to do this. You just need to more or less look up the 'skirt' of the valve while doing this and see if the diaphram moves as the engine rpms change from idle to the raised amount. If you can't get it to move by doing this then you do have a problem that needs to addressed. If you can get it to move than I wouldn't worry about the code unless you have drivability issues because like I said above, ecm's bitch about this sometimes when it really isn't warrented. However, don't let it make you ignore the SES light. Obviously, other codes can set it too.

and the egr is bolted to the rear of the intake manifold. do i need to remove the plenum to check it??

It's more like the middle of the intake manifold, directly under the plenum. Checking it the two ways I mentioned above, given you can find a little dentist like mirror or something similar, you won't need to remove it. In fact, the engine needs to be running in test mentioned above, so removing it isn't an option. If you find vacuum at the valve and still are not getting it to move, it is stuck and needs to be replaced. Then the plenum will have to come off. If you havent done it before don't worry, it's nothing to be afraid of.
