Need Help with code 34

I have a strange code 34 problem. When I first start my car the SES light comes on and stays on. Scanned for codes and I am getting a code 34. However, sometimes when I start it the light does not come on at all. Overall, the car runs very well. Just a solid code 34 right at startup that will not go away until I try and do a restart. Once in a while the car will die out at a light but will then start right up with no problems. And everytime it has died at idle was when the SES light was not on.

Any suggestions? I already swaped the sensor with a know good one and still have exactly the same problem. So I pretty confident it is not the sensor.

I have 1988 305 TPI MAF car. Automatic trans

I'm getting the same thing, too. Sometimes fine, sometimes not. Last time I had this problem about 2 years ago, it turned out to be a bad connection at the mass airflow power relay. We tested the power going into the mass airflow sensor and it was dead. So if you can do that when you're getting the light, it can be somewhere to start.

I just thought I would update any one interested in this post. I changed the Mass Air flow power relay, (not the burnoff one) just the mass air flow power relay and no more code 34 to date.

I am keeping my figures crossed that this solved the problem.

I know mine is either a wiring problem or the power relay. I started checking voltages on the different wires going to the power relay and to and from the maf sensor and did have some intermittent anomalies leaving the power relay and leaving the maf sensor, but it led me to no conclusions. Sometimes they would read fine, sometimes not. Finally everything started reading fine as I was poking around and has been fine since. I suspect bad connections in the connector that goes to the power relay, though.

Those varying reading have bad relay written all over it. I would just swap it out. A got the power relay for $9.99 at Autozone. At that price why not give it a try. Update the post if you find anything different. I think alot people would interested

That was one thing I suspected, so I had actually swapped the MAF power relay for the burnoff relay so I'll just have to wait and see how things go. I'll actually be swapping to SD because I am tired of getting MAF codes. Not that I get them all the time, but for the cost of a new MAF sensor I can swap to SD and never have to worry about it again. I have never had to replace my MAF sensor, but I went out and bought a SD system during this last bout with the code 34.
