PITA, but I would not make another move until I had put a degree wheel on the cam and made sure where it was. The slop in the crank keyway, cam keyway, gears and chain can ad up to a cam that you thought was installed straight up, but is nowhere near where it should be.
All quality timing chain sets have multiple keyways in them, necessary to get things timed correctly because of the "stacked" tolerances. A cam out of time will result in a major dog.
Just so you don't feel dumb, my first engine I plastigauged all the bearings twice, but was so busy playing with the plastigauge, I forgot to put in the rear main seal. Didn't notice until we fired it off and oil came pouring out the back of the crank. (DUH!!!)

Well I can now officially tell you that you have a serious problem.
Just finally got my SR machine to the track, and she ran like a SOB, yikes
Traction was poor but otherwise, lookout!
