TPI Cams

Once again I bought the car used, so I don't know what it has in it, It idles pretty smoothly, and I believe it is a stock Cam. It is a 305 TPI, basically stock(as far as I know), except for ported Plenum. I had thoughts of changing out the cam for something a little hotter.

Can I swap in a ZZ4, LT1 or LT4 Hot cam without other modifications? Does it work like that?

What cams would I want to look for, other than the ZZ4, LT1 or the LT4 Hot Cam?

Also would a L98 cam benifit me much?

I have a stock stall (I think) and a 700r4.

Correct me if I'm wrong with any of this, and please advise me the best options you can come up with.

It depends a great deal on what you plan to do with the car.

Is it a daily driver? Do you plan to race it; if so what type of racing?

Is idle quality and/or fuel economy important to you? What about emissions testings? What gear is in the car?

Do you plan to make other modifications in tne future?

It's difficult to make a good recommendation without knowing more about your plans and the car.

You will need to upgrade your valve springs and other stuff if you pick something like the Hot Cam and your motor wont really benefit from a "healthy cam" due to your heads and cam.

A good choice for you would be the Comp Cam XR264HR-12 especially if you dont want to do alot of ECM tuning.

Daily Driver, Yes...

Racing, just the little bit of street racing, occasional drag strip, but that'll be pretty occasional.

I would like a little bit of a rough idle, although I would like to keep my fuel economy as good as possible, while still adding power.

Emission Testing is supposedly pretty rough here in California, so I would need to stay legal if possible, I really don't care as long as it will pass the smog test.

I have a 700r4 Tranny, and a 3.08 rear end, but I am swapping to a 3.23 Rear soon, So I'd be putting a cam in based upon the 3.23 rear.

I would like to stick a set of Trick Flow heads or L98 Heads on in the near future. And eventually I plan on putting in a 383 stroker, but I doubt I could use the same cam on it.

I would rather stay away from ECM tuning if possible, as I don't know much about tuning the ECM, and have none of the equipment to do so at this time.

I would probably atleast upgrade my rockers, saw some 1.6 Rollers from Crane for a reasonable price.

I guess I should look at springs too then, huh?

XR264HR-12 is about as big as you would want to go if you dont want to tune the ECM. Yes, springs are a good idea, but not really neccesary with this cam (As long as you stay with 1.5 rocker ratio).

I was going to put in a L98 cam in place of the "peanut" 305 cam just because it is a cheap and efficient route. I think the LT1 cam will work. But, becareful if you throw in 1.6 roller rockers because if may create too much lift and bottom out your valve springs.

Curiosity question for anyone here with all the cam catalogs....

Found a comp cam that i like 210/220 and 500/510 lift(i think been awhile) was almost used instead of my lt4hotcam that i have instead.... anyone make anything in the high teens to 220 duration on the intake and exhuast in the area of .500 to .525 lift but on a more tpi friendly 114-116 LCA?

post it up here if u get a chance
thanks
Jeremy

CompCams, and others, will grind you one however you want it.

Don't think those cams listed in the front part of the catalog are the only ones they offer. They have thousands of lobes and can mix and match lobes for you and grind it on whatever LSA you want.

I had one done last year by choosing two lobes from the back of the catalog, specifying no advance to be ground in and ordered it on 114 LSA. No additional cost and I had it in only a few days.

Hope this helps.
