forgot how to install my fpr (ASAP)
I am working right now putting my stock fuel pressure regulator back on my 88 TA 5.7 tpi. I need to have it before 6:00 (it's 3 right now.
This is a simple question and should only take one reply or so.
the stock fpr includes:
-cap
-gasket w/spring attached
-metal ring w/ lip
This is how I'm guessing it goes on from bottom to top:
-put down gasket w/spring
-then place metal ring with lip side facing down towards gasket
-then place cap over everything
Am I right?
thanks,

Wrong! Put cap over spring and gasket and then put ring over cap with lip facing up. I just had to replace mine with a stock fuel pressure regulator from the dealer.

i'm guessing u mean the metal ring with the holes for the screws. that goes on top of the cap with the lip facing up. i thought you were talkin about the metal round piece that goes on top of the spring inside the regulator.

Lol....too late. Already installed it, put everything back together, and fired it up. Ran for about 1 second and then shut off as fuel was spraying everywhere!
I thought it might have been because my stock gasket was warped some from sitting in the box for 6 months. So, I went out and bought a new stock fpr. I haven't installed it because I am back at work again till 9:00 (it's 6:20 here). So would it be safe to reuse the old one still since the screws clamp it down? Or should I just go ahead and install the new one. I would prefer to use the old one if possible because I'd rather spend my $22 towards something else since it's only going to be on there temporarily.
Also: When I was installing it I stripped 3-4 of those damn security screws because I was using a bit that was a tad too small (t-8). As we speak my friend is picking me a t-10 one from his work because that's the smallest they sell. Please tell me t-10 will work. I hope it's not a t-9.

hey man sorry about the misinformation i didnt think you were talkin about the big ring with the screw holes.
i have my stock regulator in my tool box and the gasket is somewhat warped but i've put it on like that before without any leaks. it was when i decided to put a quarter in it to see what the new fuel pressure would be. i've taken it off since then and put back the Holley AFPR.
T-10 should work. that's what i use to remove and install mine.

thanks for appologizing. Luckily there was no harm done....I hope. I remember reading about that quarter trick. The reason I am putting my stock one back on is to see if it is any better than my Accel one. (I lost about 1/2 sec on the track when I put it on in May)......It took me two and a half hours to swap them the first time. Took me less than an hour to do it this time..... And It's going to be even faster this time. I'm getting it down to a science now. I've learned that I only have to undo the 8 upper runner bolts and just slide the plenum up out of the way. Hmmm.....I wonder if one of those bendable snake drivers would let me do it without removing the plenum at all?.....Probably take more time lining them up with that drive than it would take to slide the plenum up.

I think that the location of the screw holes would be impossible to get to. Just take off the plenum, it's quick and easy, with no worries about getting to the screws.
I'm curious how you slowed down in the 1/4 after adding the AFPR. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? You need one to set the pressure. If you just guess at what you think it should be at, most likely you will be waaaaaay off.
If you do have a gauge, what did you set it to? Did you play with the settings at the track? Since we know the stock pressure setting (should be in the Tech area, or in haynes/chiltons, I know it's around somewhere) why didn't you just set the Accel one back to the factory setting instead of putting the stock one back on?
Oh, since you only ran your engine for a little bit with fuel spraying anywhere you shouldn't have hurt anything. Just make sure you clean up all the spilled fuel.
Bottom line(my thoughts), if you don't have a gauge right now, just put the stock one back on correctly and wait until you get a gauge to put on the accel.

The stock one is back on! Unfortunately I had to use the new one I just bought because installing the ring inside the cap tore a hole in my original gasket. ....
I fired it up and checked the pressure....... Almost a steady 47.5! I don't know what the stock psi is, but I was real excited about the needle hardly jumping at all. It was bouncing a little still (about +/- .5), but a HUGE improvement! I still have to let my car run for a long time to see what it does after it gets hot. The idle has smooth out tons (not completely normal yet but about 1k times better) And I can definately feel a greater throttle response. I can't tell if it's faster or not....but I'm headed out to the track today to find out.
As far as the old one goes:
-I don't remember if I looked up the stock psi when I installed the accel one or not,....but I do remember that I did something wrong while setting the fp (I might have forgotten to remove the vacuum line or something) I do remember the needle was bouncing around even then though and I want to believe I set it at 50 or so.....but I remember that I didn't even touch the adjustment on it because it appeared to be where I thought might be a good fp.
-I tried tuning it at the track a few times but failed because the screw was hard to get to and my runners were way to hot to even get my hand close to it.
-I did think the fp was too high at one point and did try bumping it down. I had to turn and turn and turn the screw and it register little to no difference in fp. I even turned it so much that the adjustment screw fell off at some point on the road....So the last month or so I've been without the screw.
best 1/4 mile Before:
14.563 @ 93.16
best 1/4 mile after Accel afpr
15.109 @ 92.73
best 1/4 mile after adding my cam, doing random things to fp, and playing with timing (this run was done at about 5degress retarded (worked best) and no afpr screw)
14.616 @ 94.43

I think i know why you lost time on your 1/4 with the adjustable FPR. if you adjusted it with the vacuum line on, then chances are you had it set too low. I kinda had trouble adjusting mine when i put it on. I set it at 50 with the line on and the reading with the line off (which is how your supposed to adjust it) was at around 40 psi, which is way too low for TPI. So chance are you werent getting enough fuel, which may have led to your car having bad throttle response. You also have to be careful with setting it too high, because the increased fuel pressure makes your injectors 'act' bigger. Check out this website, it will tell you how your injector size will 'change' with more fuel pressure.

That actually might explain some things.....I did check the Accel fp correctly last night before I tore it off and it was reading between 46-48....until the car decided to go into its surging idle state....
I just got back from the track though.....Disapointing times.
My best:
15.120 @ 91.77
So it runs better, but is slower......hmmm....I can't win. There has to be some logical explaination...because there is no way a afpr is going to knock off a half second on your et (best time with afpr was 14.616 @ 94.43) and all I did was put the stock one back on.
