Timing chain gasket leak

Ok, I've had my 85 iroc for about 6 months, and my brother owned it before I. He had the engine modded by someone who did an ok job, but left us with many problems, and we have no way of getting a hold of him, but that is another issue all together. Anyway, basically, the timing chain cover gasket has broke a leak twice in the past year. I was told if the person who changed it before didn't drop the oil pan, it might cause this. Is it possible that I am using too light of an oil? I am using 10w30, should I go with a heavier weight? Also, the car now has a problem, that after like 3-6 months, the timing gets way off and has to be readjusted back, what could cause this? Thanks guys
