tranny cable?

okay, i just recently bought a bit of a fixer upper '89 z28/iroc. I'm sure i will have alot of questions concering it in the future, but here's my question right now. There is a cable that runs along my floor from under my center console / shifter to under my pedals which besically leads to nothing, but there is this plastic deal at the end that has a little metal "tab" that comes out of the end of it. Now the metal "tab" gets pulled in when I push down the button on my shifter, I have no idea what this is, but it seems to me like it's probably important for something, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what it is and what i should do with it???

It should be the cable that runs to your brake. This way you can't take the car out of park without having the brake pedal depressed.
