Another oil leak

Another oil leak
Well after I fixed my first oil leak everything was fine. It was the front and back of the intake gasket. I had a buddy help me redo it so that it wouldn't leak again. We put a lot of RTV sealent on there. He gauranteed no leaks. Couple weeks later I see oil around the drain plug. Tighten it, no leaks. Then it starts leaking again. Change my oil, new drain plug and gasket and it starts leaking again. Tighten it even more and it stops leaking. Now there is oil around the back side of my oil filter and it is leaking down to the bottom of it and dripping on the ground. I cannot figure out where it is coming from because it is in a tight spot. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Oh yeah, I did the valve cover gaskets too.

Unfortunately you'll probably have to clean it up real good and actually get under there to get a good look.
I have a leak I've been chasing down for a while now and I think it's from the base of the dipstick tube but I can't see well enough to tell for sure. After I get my SFCs it will be easier to jack the car up and maybe I'll get a better look.

Allright. I have tried cleaning it plenty of times but it usually comes back when I am not looking. I put my car on jack stands and looked really close and saw that around and on the oil filter is wet. It looks like where the filter is attatched to his wet. It is not the intake or the valve cover gaskets or the oil pressure sending unit. It doesn't look like it is much higher then where the filter sits. This is the 4th filter since it started leaking and it has not stopped. When it starts leaking I tighten it a little bit. Then it will leak again and I tighten it more. It just keeps going. Does anyone have any ideas because I have run out of them?
The part where the filter is attached to, can that be seperated from the block? I was thinking it was leaking from there but I don't know if it comes off or if it is sealed.

My 88 did the same thing. Oil sending unit on the side of the block was leaking. I to thought the filter or oil cooler was leaking but nope. My sending unit was $11 at Autozone. Hope this helps.

I dont mean to patronize you at all, but have you checked to make sure you removed the old o-ring from your old filter before you put on the new one? I know guys who have done that before multiple times - I learned from them before I had a car so I haven't done it yet lol. Good luck.

I was pretty sure it wasn't the oil pressure sending unit and I checked into it more. I even took off the oil pressure sending unit and it is dry. So is all of the area around it. I then looked at the oil filter, wiped it nice and dry. I started the car and I could see a small stream of oil leaking down the rear passenger side of where it sits (next to the flywheel) This is probably the 4th filter that has leaked. I am thinking there is something wrong with where it is seated. Maybe the metal is warped somehow? If this is the problem do they make another plate that bolts up? I was told that you could by the part where the filter seats up to. Is this true?
And yes I made sure that gasket wasn't still up there and I made sure that there were no obstructions. I always do when I change my oil.

Yeah, take off the filter and do a real good inspection of the mating surface for the filter's o-ring. If it looks rough for any reason, it should be suspected. Also, wipe down the whole area and inspect carefully to see if you can see where it's coming out.

What I am going to do is go and buy the part where the Filter attaches to. I am going to change the oil and the filter and the part even though I only have 200 miles on my oil. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I will be sure to let you know.

What I did was drained the oil, removed the filter and looked for where the gasket goes. I couldn't find where it goes. All I could see is the part where the filter screws on to. I unbolted that, inspected everything and it looked fine. Since nothing else could be removed and there was nowhere to put the $15 gasket I just decided to clean the area really well. Then I put everything back together and installed a different brand filter then Fram. I have gone about 20 miles so far and no leaks yet. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I was wondering - how tight are you getting the oil filter? I dont know what the exact recommendation is, but I put a little oil on my finger and spread it around the filter's o-ring before I put it up there, then I hand tighten it as much as I can and go a little more (less than 3/4 turn) with a filter wrench.
I couldnt tell you why I pre-oil the ring, I guess I just learned from my dad and I've never had a problem, so if it aint broke I dont fix it ya know?

Yes I always put some oil on the oil filter gasket when I change it.
I know I always change the oil correctly.
I usually put the oil filter on until it meets the block. Then I turn it a little more until it gets kind of tight. When the oil was leaking before i kept tightening it little by little each time until I couldn't tighten it anymore.
I have driven the car around all day now and it is not leaking. Hopefully the problem is solved.
