Smoke at startup and 'delayed' start

Smoke at startup and 'delayed' start
Here it is. When my car is cold or has had time to cool for a few hours (3++) it start right away without problem - barely a full turn of the starter.
For the past year, when warm, it turn over quite a bit - up to 4 or 5 seconds before it starts. Whenever it does this, I don' t even bother looking out the back 'cause it spits out a nice cloud of smoke. At first I though it was my oil rings or valve guide's/seals but now I'm thinking it's the damn injectors.
Could the fuel pressure regulartor cause this to happen as well? As far as I remember, it was a lot easier to change than the injectors..
The smoke isn't really white or blue - it's sortof misty - gas smelling smoke.
Is a leakdown test my answer?

if you think the fpr may be at fault remove the vacuum line and look inside it or even smell it. there maybe fuel inside it. when i looked at my line there was definitely fuel in there . if the smoke it brown or black then there excess fuel in the cylinders. and if you have an 89' you're bound to have multec injectors which are the worst ever made. the are half grey and half aluminum. i would replace them anyway. i the type who doesn't want any suprise problems. well who does? well's that just me. best of luck.

If you have smoke at start-up, it is most likely your valve seals, but don't worry too much. I think anyone in here will tell you they have seen this a million time's on these motors. The reason it smokes after a few hours is because when the seals cool they shrink allowing some oil by them. As the car warms up a bit, the seal's expand and seal properly. Really nothing to worry about!

Sorry, I did not read that carefully at all!! Yes, now that I read again you most likely have an injector problem. My car did the exact same thing, The # 1 injector was toast. Tossed in the accell's and problem solved. It took me a year to pin point that stupid problem. Ohh ya, and the plug was black when I took it out, so you can check that aswell.
