Two important questions must be answered first.
1.) How much work are you willing and able to do?
2.) How much money are you willing and able to spend?
Obviously, a great setup would be a MiniRam-ed 383 with Air Flow Research 190cc heads, a HOT LT4 camshaft, and full length headers. But that's about $7000 worth of parts and an engine swap.
For more modest gains, you could upgrade your TPI to a Vortec baseplate and high-flowing runners, get a set of Vortec heads, a high flowing exhaust system, and a 52mm throttle body. That setup would get you a little over 300 hp and would run about under $2000.
Or you could get the high flowing runners and standard type base plate, leave you cyl heads alone, but get a higher flowing exhaust system. You'll get about 285 hp and it would cost you about $1000.
Of course there are the smaller things like air filters, TPI airfoils, ignition upgrades like high-powered coils, MSD capacitive discharge boxes, and the like. The gains from these things are often un-noticeable and sometimes negligible. But they're generally very inexpensive and ok starting points.
