Well, im in the process of putting together my 406 tpi and was wondering what type of times to be expecting. Im going to be running the crane powermax 272-2 grind. the specs are 272/284 with .454/.480 lift with a 216/228 duration @050. Ill be runing a piston with 9.5:1 compression. Im ussing ported and polished 882 casting heads that worked pretty good on my 350. My main hold back will be my intake for now. Right now im running a stock tpi base thats been siamesed down to about 2in left for the intake runners going into the head. Im running the stock runners and a ported to hell plenum. I know that this intake setup will kill topend breathing abilities, but i dont have enough money right now to buy the stealth ram like im wanting to. Next year sometime i will be getting one to help out its high rpm battle.
As far as gears go im going to be running a 3.55 gear. The tranny is a th350 with a 2000 rpm stall in it. with all this, what do you think ill be runnin as far as 1/4s go?
Thanks all
chris

Chris,

What are you putting the engine ? A chevelle?

Your going to have more torque than anything, with the TPI setup and your right its going to kill your upper RPM. I would get you have to shift it at about 4300-4600 to get any decent times out of it.

I would say you will run mid 12s with the setup, as you decribe it.

If you put a SR or miniram on it you will probably pick up 3/4 of a second to put you at about 11.7-12.1s.

IF you do the SR you're gears should be about 9:1 Gear ratio for first gear, with the mini ram want a little more gear maybe, but not much. These 400s crank pretty hard out of the hole, and gears will just set the tires on fire. Even with 3.07s, mine are still spinning pretty bad out of the hole, pulling 1.52 60'

I will say this and you can take my advice or not, but you really should have the entire plan laid out for what intake etc you plan on running. The intake/cam/heads etc should all be matched as best as possible to yeild the best results, even if your not planning on doing it all at once. A good plan is what will make a your setup a high 12s/13s setup, or a mid-low 11s setup.

Good luck!

depending on what car you put this in and the weight
and if it will be dyno tuned.....
untuned I would say mid high 13's depending on weight 3500+
tuned high 12's at 3500lbs

Hey ski its goin in my 72 chevelle. Do you think that the cam that i have now will be good enough, or do i need to go bigger? Im trying to put it together now for use with the stealth ram later on down the road. Do you think that this cam is on the small side for a hsr? I'm thinking it may be a little small, but i could be wrong. As of right now i dont have the cam ordered yet. I could step up the cam to the crane power max 278-2 which is a 278/290 adv duration with .467/.494 lift. Do you think that the 278-2 cam would be a better match with the hsr? Thanks for the help.

With running the stock runners...you will be higher 12's...maybe...they are pretty restrictive...but so is the stock base. The siamesing helps, but it isn't great.

Before buying my HSR, I ran an Edelbrock base, stock runners and stock plenum...the combo ran out of breath at 4500 or so rpm...and that was with decent 400 heads. It pulled a lot stronger with a carb setup in my last vehicle...

I would try to find some aftermarket runners cheap...if you can't go HSR....

I thought that the cam in my sig was mild...so yours is pretty mild
