Help with OHIO emissions

All, I am having a nightmare trying to pass e-check with my 87 GTA. It has a 350 TPI. Intake is ported, FP at 43PSI, MSD ignition, long tube headers with new dual cats going into a flowmaster. By the way everything is new... cap/rotor, plugs, wires, air filter, oil, O2, etc....air pump gone, egr gone. Anyway the first time I went I got these results....

..... Actual ..... Limits
HC ...... 1898.3 ..... 148.0
CO ..... 1.66 ..... .94
CO2 ..... 11.13 ..... NA Don't need to pass this

I found the AFPR faulty and changed to a new one setting pressure to 43PSI and timming to 10 degrees. That brought the HCs down but my CO up?

..... Actual ..... Limits
HC ..... 272.4 ..... 148.0
CO ..... 3.23 ..... .94
CO2 ..... 12.61 ..... NA Don't need to pass this

My plates are expired and I need to figure out a way to pass this. In Ohio they put us on rollers and run it to 35MPH. I have read on here about alcahol in the tank... what does this do to HC and CO? I have read conflicting info on advancing /retarding timming...remember I don't have to pass CO2. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated...this is getting expensive very fast. Thanks,
Tyler

I live in Ohio too and if you spend three hundred dollars to try to fix it then you automatically pass regardless of your readings. I would try to find a mechanic to write you a reciept for that amount if all else fails. -John

i've heard that a pint of rubbing alchohol in the tank and you will pass, it's what all these garages that guarantee you'll pass e-check will do.

i'd be hesitant about the dummy receipt, currently an underhood check of the engine emissions is not required, but if they do decide to check after a 2nd failure and the receipt, they could nab you for emissions tampering.

no chance to put the emissions stuff back on for the test?

good luck. only 9 more years and your car qualifies as an historic vehicle in ohio, no emissions requirements or tests.

Well the problem with the receipt is that they do want to check under the hood. I have already spent the $300 on parts but don't want them under the hood. I know I won't do well with that. I can't put the emmisions stuff on since the car didn't come with it. I had a truck I put a TPI motor in without all the emmisions stuff, just cat and it ran very clean so I know it can be done. Does anyone know the ratio for alcohol and what kind to run?

By the way does anyone know the emmisions requirments for an 82 or 83? It may be worth retitling just so I have lower requirments untill I can get this running right. Thanks,
Tyler

turn your fuel psi down a few pounds and take some timing out. put in around a 1/2 galon of gas line antifrezz . take the car for a rip to make sher the cats are tosty. I get my car tested in the winter so i can use studded tire so they can only do an idle test:lala:

when you say the car didn't have the emissions stuff on it, did the previous owner take it off? and how did it pass the emissions test the first time when you 1st titled it? to my knowledge all the tpi cars came w/the air system and egr.

i don't know how you could get an 87 retitled to an 82/83 without an inspection. do you know anyone in a non-emission county whose address you could use to bypass the emissions test, until recently (within last 5 - 7 years or so) my county, medina, did not require a test.

btw. your limits on an 87 were:

HC: 148.0 ppm
CO: 0.94%
gas cap pres.: ?

mine for an 89 are:

HC: 144.0 ppm (actual 26.0)
CO: 0.92% (actual 0.03%)
gas cap pres.: 6.00 (actual 27.80)

looks like HC limit increases 2.0 ppm per year, HC % increases 0.02% per year, don't know your cap press. but...doing the math you would gain 8.0ppm and 0.1% for an 83.

Interesting, My gas cap passed with 6.00 required also.
- I can't turn the FP down anymore the screw will come out.
- The car came without the emmisions stuff this is the 1st time I am titeling it.
- I assume gas line antifreeze is just alcohal?

Thanks for the help guys I think I may have to buy another car because I can't afford to put all the emmisions stuff on this motor and I can't afford to keep testing at $20 a time untill I can get it to pass.

don't give up yet...since you bought the car as is, call the bmv or the e-check or whoever and find out what your options are. maybe they will give you a waiver, as long as you did not tamper with it you should be ok.

if nothing else get a fresh 30 day tag to give you some time to figure it out.

i bought mine in march '03, 2 sets of 30 day tags and a special plate permit before the real plates went on it.

hang in there.

My third and final tag is expired and they won't give me another. I checked to see what my options were and they told me that I had the burdon of proving that the previous owner tampered with the emissions. I was the one to put cats on the car, I just can't afford to do the rest. They said I could probably go to court to get the purchase price of the car back from the previous owner but that is a huge hedache. What is the special permit tag? I called the 1800-car-test number and talked to them and they told me I either had to pass or replace all removed emmisions equipment. Thanks again for the help,
Tyler

i ordered special plates for the car "MD 350" they give you a special permit tag till your plates arrive.

don't know what else to suggest.

Do you have to show them an e-check form when you order those special plates or when they arrive?
