tranny cable sure is sensitive

I installed a new transmission kickdown cable along with a new throttel cable and bracket. I wasnt sure where to set the Tranny cable so I just put it to where it was just maxining out the control on the valve in the tranny. Shifte terrible, wouldn't shift at all til 3000rpm from first to second, then shifte really hard. Moved the adjustable piece in on the cable about 1/8" so it is pulling harder on the cable, now it shifts about the same as before, although it seems like it shifts to soon. If the range from to far one way to too far the other is 1/8" inch on the cable, that is a very sensitive cable. What is the way to tell if it is adjusted properly. If there is any leeway I want to adjust for drag racing. I heard tho that you can damage your tranny if it is to far out of adjustament

Is this a 700R4 trans, or did you
retro in a TH350/400?

In the 700R4, it's not a kickdown cable,
its a throttle-valve (TV) cable that
adjusts line pressure for shifts.

It should be adjustable in 1mm increments
to dial in the shift.

1/8" is alot for the TV, so I can imagine
you'd notice alot of diff. The usual
adjustment is to push it in (towards
the rear of the engine) and then open
the throttle by hand slowly until the
adjuster pulls out..

i think the factory kickdown limit was 2/3 gas pedal travel, not necessarily an RPM range. so it could just be a physical check with the car off.

but that's good to know, mine's seemed a little off since i had the new engine put in, might have to have a look to see if it's "close enough"

This is a aftermarket Lokar TV cable and it is adjustable by moving a metal piece with a hole and a set screw along the cable in front of the plastic piece that snaps onto the throttle body. It is a 700r4 and you are right, they refer to it as a kickdown cable but it really is much more. I didn't realize it was so sensitive. Yes I moved it about 1/8" so Im goin to move it back a bit and see how it shifts. I guess the only real way to adjust it is to move it and then drive it and see how it feels. I would rather it shifte at a little higher rpms that to low, that would be better for drag racing. I know it shifted before at about 4500 or so. I heard you can ajdust it to much that way and possibly damage your transmission though.
