TPI reliable?
Tonight I was getting ready to order some parts for my third gen.It was going to be the first thing I was going to buy that cost alot for the car.My mom asked me what I was doing and I told her.And she was like for what car.And I told her my camaro. She suggested against it.
After I though it about it made since. My car needs alot of work. And it could be a strip only car. This got me thinking. If I save up some money.I could afford to sell my cavalier and buy a third gen.I don't want a carb though.I would prefer Tuned port to throttle body.So what years did they have TPI?Was the l98 a tpi car?
This car will be my daily driver since I am selling my cavalier. My dream car (realisticly)Has always been an 86 iroc.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for th info.My car is going to get a new transmission here soon. And then it goes up for sale.I won't sell it for less than 2 grand. The body is mint,The paint ain't bad.The motor runs perfect.Interior needs a new center console to be mint.I bought the car from the original owners. And she drove it through college and then bought a new car.
I should have somewhere around 2500 to spend.I should be able to find nice car for that.

FYI, the 86 Irocz was the slowest Iroc made.
305 TPI + 2.73 gears + tiny peanut cam +stricter emissions =
around 16 flat @ low 80's mph.
If you're looking for performance then start around 1989 years and get the 5.7 litre 350 L98.
IMO 1992 was the best year for power out of the 5.7 TPI.
1992 Z28 could turn 14.3 @95 mph completely stock no mods, on the all-season radials.

My car has left me walking several times due to the TPI. Once with the bad injectors, ignition pickup coil another, and ignition module just recently. And there were many months when the damn thing just wouldn't run right.

Any car can be a lemon, but my car (L98) runs perfect with 170,000 miles. I've had to do some work obviously, with that many miles, but I've never had problems with the TPI.

My car, an 89 Formula 350 (which has the L98), has left me walking several times. I would like to point out that this was due to my mistakes in upgrades rather than the design of TPI. One other thing I would like to point out is that these cars are aging, and will probably need new parts put on them from time to time, simply due to age, things wear out. My car has been very good to me, 125,000 and it has stopped due to my decision to fully restore it. The engine still runs like a champ though and shows no signs of stopping. If you take care of the car, the car will take care of you.

I've got 3 TPI cars. I haven't driven the newest one enough yet to comment on reliability, but my GTA has over 140k miles and has been 100% reliable since I got it 10k miles ago. My IROC was reliable until I started screwing with it. Any reliability issues with that car are due to my substantial modifications.
The great thing about TPI is that most of the problems won't leave you stranded. The car can still run if some of the sensors quit. The only stuff that can cause the car to be a sitting duck, other than a bad ECM (which almost never happens), is basically the same as with any cars... fuel pump, ignition problem, etc.

You have to remember though, if the car has been abused which sometimes you cant tell, then it could have reliability issues. Also to find a l98 car for $2500 it might not be in the best of shape. I just sold my 89 T/A l98 for $4500. One more moot point, the l98 t/a only came with t-tops in 89.

All cars will have problems if you dont take care of them. Ive put almost 30k on mine and have never been stranded. 20k of it was when it was a tbi car and 10k of it has been tpi. Worst thing i had happen was the fuel pump relay went bad but it set off a code and 15 bucks later it was back to normal.
