few questions
well i got my modified chip in and decided to put it in and try it.....
temps here were around 20* so i froze my *** off doing it.....
it cranked for about 3-5 sec then it fired........ also i have a light knocking sound that i'm pretty sure is the driverside valves needing adjustment.....
my questions are why did it take 3-5 sec of cranking to start and to rule out detonation does the knock sensor function in open loop???
my uncles seems to think where it had the stock chip when we first started it that i might have fouled the plugs from running so rich.... that would explain the slight miss it has when at idle...but if it's that whats the knocking??
i know it's not a rod, because the bearing specs are right on, and it sounds different from what i have, its like a loud tapping, a possible rocker stub breakage?
any ideas on where to start diagnosing is appeciated....
it has afr 190's timing is 6* btdc with the est unplugged.....

this is a brand new baby from top to bottom.......
it has a scat 383 crank scat 4340 i beam rods, speedpro l2491f30 pistons hat push out 10.3:1 compression with 68cc heads.....
i think it's just the valves but i need to eliminate spark knock from the equation........
any ideas?

Who did the chip? Maybe it needs more fuel in the startup injector pulsewidth table.
When it's cold outside, mine doesn't want to start either.
Did you pull a plug to see if it was fouled?
From what I know, the knock sensor is on. I get knock counts when starting the car if the initial timing is too high, or something is making noise, like an exhaust hitting something.

hmmm
i modified a arap bin for the 30lb injectors...... no big changes but i set the fans to come on at180, and total timing in the spark adv in wot was set to 38......... this was considered enough so that i can get it broke in and go from there....... i can send ya a copy of the bin for ya to look at if ya will..........
the cam is a comp 282hr hyd roller with a 112*lsa... it lopes but not too bad.. i'm going to change the oil and adjust the valves asap and go from there... if this dosent solve it's either a messed up rod bearing which it dosent seem or leaking exhaust....
as for the start up, it ran rich for a sec my guess getting rid of all the builtup fuel from preveious start but it cleared up almost instantly..........
i think i might go out and check the plugs right fast....... the no 1 was sooty from all the gas before so i don't think 1 min of run time on the new chip is going to clear it up....
good to know the knock sensor is running on startup though....

Do you have an msd box or something similar?
Do a search on the ARAP and hard starting in the prom forum, there are problems with the start-up fueling on some cars.

yep
i have a msd 6a with msd cap rotor wires and coil, afr3ls ac delco plug, not sure if i spelled them right but the ones afr reccomends......

i did a search here a found a interesting thread...
the topic was a fix to arap starting probs people were expereincing a crank time like i have.... the fix to this was to mod a bin named "crank fuel pw multiplier vs ref pulses (1-16)"
it seems that if i change all the 0's in the 1-8 to .5 for 1-4 and .25 for 4-8 that i can easily cure this problem, if there any drawbacks or cautions you might have before i try this? is it a bad idea or a good idea?

You have to try different things to see the effect. Make the change and if it starts faster, then you've fixed it. Trial and error is part of burning chips.
