405 hp?

Is it possible to get 405+ hp from a normally aspirated, smog-legal injected L98 without nitrous or power adders?

If so how and using what?

Very interested.

I think with a stroked 383, miniram or other high-rpm/hp fuel injection (kinda stuck with superram for emissions legal), and a fairly "rugged" cam with matched and ported heads (AFR's) and a whole lot of chip tuning you could get close

At the crank, sure. Probably many ways to go about it. A 383 miniram with a big cam is overkill for 400 horsepower, unless you want 400rwhp. I guess the 383 would be easier to get power out of, though.

Exactly. Depends on whether you are talking rwhp or crank horsepower. 405 Crank Horsepower is not too difficult to get from a streetable 350ci engine. That equates to about 320 - 344 rwhp.

405 hp at the flywheel is possible, check out my combination on my 350 TPI. My desktop dyno says 406hp, which would be at the flywheel. all of my mods are listed on the 2nd page of my website if your interested.

MrNova - sounds more like you are talking rear wheel hp...

No, sorry ...404.976851 HP is all you get.

Then again, I guess you can round the numbers off...

Yeah, I was. I assumed so 'cause 405 is pretty easy at the crank...

My corvette's L98 is making 388hp & 439 ft/lb right now out of its stock 350ci. This is with way too much timing and a horrendous fuel curve. Once this is sorted out it should be in the 410/470 area. If you'd like to see what is in the engine I have everything listed here....

Those numbers are before the nitrous was installed.

Any angles, especially the side. I just love yellow C4s

That would be crank. Last dyno trip was 322hp & 369 ft/lb at the wheels. With tuning I'm looking to get 340 / 390. <crosses fingers> It made over 300 at the wheels from 4400 to 6300 RPM.

Ugh, horrible ones so far.

12.89 @ 109.66

The car's A/F curve is horrible and needs work. There is a serious rich area below like 4400 RPM. When the car hooks it bogs badly as torque is suffering something horrible with the extra fuel and cuts 2.2 60' times if I don't slip the clutch more than I'd like to. It is irritating for now as I used to see 1.9s on street tires.

If you stand on it from about 2000 it sorta sucks, but as soon as you clear 4000 it is like somebody lit the other 4 sparkplugs finally and it throws you back. I have to take care of this come spring for sure.

Once it gets moving though it is great. I'm picking up anywhere from 25-27mph in the last 1/8th mile depending on how bad the first 1/8th was. I can tell you this though, the TPI used to take a good couple of miles to hit 150mph starting from a role on the highway. She now hits it in juuuust over a 1/2 a mile starting from 70. The top end is rediculous compared to the stock configuration. A few months ago I was playing with a new Z06 on the highway. I changed lanes to let him pass and when he passed me he got on it. With the jump he was only able to pull about 3.5 to 4 lenghts on me from 65 to 155.

Check out the nasty A/F curve......

Thats pretty funny!!!!
I just read this post, i've been over on the prom board too long.

Others:
405Hp at the crank can be done with a 350TPI with tons of mods, but it is alot easier with a LS1 engine.

How much Hp is a sequential FI system worth????

Our batch fired stuff seems to limit Hp and the selection of the fuel injectors because I'm at 100% duty cycle on my L98 at 6,000rpm with PW of 10.0msec, while my duty cycle on my LS1 car is 100% when I'm at 6,000rpm and 20msec PW. Believe it or not, both cars have the same flow rate fpr the fuel injectors: 22.0#/hr rated at 43.5psi.

BTW: My '99 SS has 400RWHP and its a heads/can car with the stock bottom end.

For my '87 IROCz, I'm still looking into a 395 cu.in. stroker.
