1989 5.7 Camaro/Firebird SLP chip/Prom
Selling a 1989 5.7 Camaro/Firebird SLP chip/Prom. This was purchased via SLP 5 months ago and the GTA was driven only on weekends. Like new! I am keeping the GTA stock and storing it for winter. Dont need this prom any longer and SLP no longer sells them. $69 plus $5.50 Priority Mail. Below is a from SLP.
"REGULARLY $135.95 NOW $69.95 Proms, 1989 Camaro/Firebird 5.7L auto dual catalyst, 50 state SLP’s prom’s are made by recalibrating brand new GM Cal-Pac’s, not by simply soldering a Prom onto a Cal-Pac. While this keeps cost down, you get a more reliable chip. The proms are recalibrated to optimize spark timing and air/fuel ratios for increases in wide open throttle performance, and turn your electric fan on at 200ºF (20º degrees cooler than stock). Note: All proms are sold as is, all sales final, no exceptions. Proms, 1989 Camaro/Firebird 5.7L auto, 49 state
SHIPPING CHARGE TO SHIP ONE OF VIA UPS GROUND $10.95

Is it a crap chip like hypertech or something similar with very little changed that one couldn't do themselves with little time investment - or does SLP make a more "real" chip? Like, does it actually improve performance significantly, and is it aggressive enough to not have to change later once many mods have been done for power?

Not worth it at all, do it yourself
On a side note:
When I looked at a Hypercrap chip my friend had they only changed the fan temp and like 5 numbers on the spark advance table, very lame. That’s about 1 minute of work.
Has anyone looked at the SLP prom? I assume they are just doing the exact same thing.

My mechanic had one laying around so I put it in to see if it would help.......NOPE, NOTHING, ZERO, ZILCH. It is a waste of time if you ask me. Oh and I had a Hypertech chip too when I bought the car and when I took it out I ran the same times.

Back to the topic,
I had an SLP Stage II chip, exact same one as above. Didn't really notice much with it. I took it out and lost it. I hear the SLP chip is one of the better ones out there.

If you guys are in the buying mood I've got an ADS superchip that my car had when I got it. 87 305 tpi
My brother had a hypertech chip and he said all it did was give him bad gas mileage. I haven't researched the ADS or SLP chips, but I know you can't edit the ADS(thanks previous owner, $65 for a stock chip when I got a new engine). Anyway, I ran 14.5 @ 96 with the ADS chip in my 305, but the engine itself was burning a quart of oil between gas stations. Would have been interesting to try a stock chip, had I known it wasn't stock back then.

Unfortunately, in order to keep it smog legal, all they do is mess around with the WOT a little bit. They also cannot severely alter the operating temperature of the engine since that greatly affects emissions.
I've looked at a Hypertech chip and it's nothing. It's somewhat incredible considering the price they charge for a $2.50 PROM that they burn at probably 10 or more at a time.
