Could someone explain VATS to me
I've been having trouble with my 86 lb9 (lopey idle and fouled pluggs) the car has a .420/.442 camshaft and headers
no vacuum leaks as well to speak of. I had a hyperjunk chip in the vehicle and yanked it in favor of the stock prom. someone suggested a different prom perhaps w/ vats what is this feature and where could i score one? (parts store?). I am going to throw a new set of autolites into it and reset the timing to 6 degrees and t.ps. to .5 hopefully it will clean up. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Vats is Vehicle Anti Theft System.
It uses a resistor built into the key to prevent hot wiring.
If you have an 86, the symtpoms you are describing could be caused by the bug in the sotkc 86 code, and it is likely that an 89 PRom with the VATS system disabled could help you very much.

I have a couple of suggestions. They both include having a scan tool of some sort. One: check the o2 voltage and make sure it is fluctuating and the BLM is not at the near 160 limit. If the BLM is very high and the o2 sensor voltage is always low you have to figure out what is causing this. Exhaust or vacuum leak or shorted wire or bad ecm. Two: check the map voltage and kpa reading. Average reading of less than 2 volts and 30-40 kpa is normal at idle. If out of range you should suspect a stuck open egr valve or some other bad vacuum leak.
