crate or custom build??

crate or custom build??
what do you guys prefer and why???
i'm at a loss right now as to build exactly what i want custom seems to be a bit outrageous for the street and cost wise not really practicle even though i can manage it. yet i can get a decent crate, change a couple things like cam and intake and have a very powerful street performer for thousands less....
what are the reliability issues of crate engines; anyone had any bad experience?

A custom built jobber would be the route i'd go, get what you want, know who puts it together everythings' matched.
For the most part they are cheaper, and as relaible uness you skimp on parts.

All depends......
What's your budget?
Have you ever assembled an engine before?
Can you get use of an engine stand ( the 4 leg kind work best, tipping it over when torquing the heads sucks )? Ring compressor? Balancer installer and puller? Same with gear puller? Torque wrench?
What kind of power are you looking for?
Crate engines can be great...no fuss, no muss, order it, get it, drop it in ( for the most part ).
However, once you're done, and a GOOD bit over budget ( guarantee it...assembly lube, paint, oil, etc etc adds up ) the 1st time you fire it up is worth it...
And especially when someone sees / hears your engine, and you get to tell 'em YOU built it.....and be telling the truth........
But to be honest, alot depends on the power you're looking to put out, and how much TIME you're willing to put into the engine. Triple-checking clearances, and sometimes swapping around bearings to get the BEST clearances etc can be very time consuming, but it's worth it...
Best advice I can give is take your TIME, and if in doubt, ask plenty of questions.
