need help my timing is off bye 30 degrees?

i put a Recon 88 L98 in my 87 gta, and i cant seem to get the timing to be at 6 degrees its off like 30 degrees but the car runs ok what would cause that? anyone have a clue that would help me? i think the car might have a 305 ESCM if that would make a difference and the engine has a 350 knock sensor.

Initial timing is a completely mechanical setting. It has nothing to do with the computer or the engine. It has to do with where you put the dizzy in. Keep moving the distributor until you have the timing in the right place, it's that simple.

Did you disconnect the tan/black lead that runs to the ecm? You have to do that first before you check it with a timing light.

your balancer could be messed up. On my stock balancer the outer ring came loose from the inner one causing the timing mark to be way off.
