I used engine degreaser and scrub brush on my TPI plenum, runners, and intake. Worked fine. I've heard something called 'Purple Power' is the **** Never tried it.
Your problem may be different. It's baked on, so try oven cleaner. Hell, it'll take paint off if you let it!

what would have made them so bad, the car ran like a champ with them on there.
I havent looked at valve seals/guides yet, but judging by the rusty stuff in there it looks like the gasket might have been leaking, could that have been what shot some smoke on start up in stead of the guides/seals?

I know I know, I dont have an excuse for my stupidity, I meant combustion chambers. I was tired I guess when I posted, it was when I got home last night, after being on the road all day, I guess that was it.

Dremel/die grinder with a cartridge roll and an old valve...
you can smooth out the casting for more detonation tollerance
Its worth the 30min-1hour at the bench if you just do some quick clean up.

To protect your valve seats while you grind around your combustion chamber
You dont want to scar a valve you're going to use, and certainly dont want to damage the seat
