I just installed a streetdampr (p/n 716544) on my 305 and when I run the engine it shakes really bad I was wondering if this is the wrong dampner or the 305 isnt compatable with it

Was the engine shaking before you installed it?

716544 is for a 400 small block. that motor is externally balanced. so yes you have the wrong one. the one you should've gotten is 716242 internal balanced.

hope you didn't hammer it on also.

because the fluidampnr is a 2 part design. there is an inner inertia ring inside the outer housing. which is filled with a special fluid. there is about .010" clearance between the 2. hammer on it, you dent the housing and jam it against the inner ring. now the dampner can't do it's job. also if i was a store owner and he was returning it and there were hammer marks all over it, i couldn't resell it.
