Budget Rebuild...Vortec Heads with what cam?
Hey guys,
I am planning to rebuild my engine, but must do it within the confines of a pretty tight budget. I have decided to go with the Vortec heads and SDPC manifold. My question concerns cam selection and computer compatability. I don't want to get into having a custom prom burned. What cams (hydraulic flat tappet) are out there that will be compatable with the stock prom ('88 350 TPI) and offer a performance increase over the stock cam? Thanks for any info.

I realize that after 87 the cams are roller cams, but I am going to go with a flat tappet hydraulic. I know that I won't be able to get a flat tappet cam that is as aggressive as a roller cam, but because I am retaining the stock prom that won't be an issue. Are the LT4 and LT1 cam specs compatable with the factory prom in my 88 IROC?

You can also use the ZZ-4 cam and it will work fine with the stock prom. A ZZ-4 cam can be purchased for $100.00 and you can reuse your roller lifters. Try and use a roller cam.

if your gonna use a late model block with the flat tappet lifters. A good cam for it would be the comp XE 262H-14. grind number 12-262-4.
it's a grind desgined for tuned port, will work well with those heads, and be computer friendly. Will need a custom type chip, but overal shouldn't be overly difficult to tune.
