I wanted to do my motor for my car i drive a 1989 IROC-Z 5.7L and i'm buildin it for racing/street now i was wondering should i build the TPI and do motor work to it or build a carb and build it instead??? HARD decision..so many different ways of lookin @ it i don't which is better and which one is more reliable and also which one will have more consistant E/T times?? Well thanx in advance to all you guys that will reply to this!!

Well it depends on how much money you want to spend. TPI will cost a lot more. Carb its pretty easy. Once you start getting a bigger cam and so forth its easier to tune a carb and cheaper. TPI is good for street racing though, good low end torque, but then again carb has good high end power. Just depends on how much money you want to spend. If you want to keep FI I';d recommend like the stealth ram, miniram, lt1 or one of the aftermarket FI systems. Proly be cheaper in the long run anyway.

you had some good points..the reason i asked this question is because i already asked to do my motor to do my TPI it's gonna cost about $10,000CAN completely done with about 470hp to the wheels according to the mechanic..and to do it carb with aprox. the same power it would cost about $7000-$8000CAN...just for the motor..which doesn't include changing the fuel pump and from what i hear the 700r4 doesn't fit properly they have to make a custom plate not to sure about that but thats what i heard....oh..yeah all the prices i'm giving you are for 383ci and all prices are canadian...it would be cheaper if i would just make it a 355ci and i also heard that more displacement could cause more problems ppl are tellin me that they can get the same power comin out of a 355ci that more displacement isn't needed...well give me your input on what i told you thanx in advance.

Well I dont what they mean buy some plate. As long as the motor is a standard SBC it will bolt up just fine. THey make talking about the fly wheel or something. In some cases you have to change that. Well I believe a 383 will get you to the power you want easier. Its all going to depend on what kinda heads, cam and intake combo your gonna run. Its kinda hard to get that much power out of a tpi for a good price. I'd recommend one of the other intake if not carb. Plus its easier to match your combo up with a carb. I'd proly do the 383 if it was me.

I would get it bored to a 355. That's what I did. If you want a 383 you have to have even more custom block work done. It has to be cleared so the longer throws on the bigger crank don't clip the block. Not worth it to me. But that's just my .02 Hope this helps.

thanx guys all the info your giving me is helpin me..well as i said a 383TPI has already been done...but it had head work and a holley intake..and much much more things...but the price scares me..lol $10,000!! carb would be so much easier but GAS PRICES are scary and carb would waste more gas..and even though i want power i still want to cruise in the city..whats the fun of driving a F-body if you can't show it off..but i was thinkin i should just bore it .30 over or even .60 over and just leave it @ that..I know if i go 383 you do have to get more engine work done cause it's a stroker and the crank and connecting rods need there space...For heads i'm gonna run the stock heads but port and polished and 1.6 roller rocker...unless i find corvette TPI heads...and port them. well thanx again guys for your help
