how to attach MAP to plenum made for MAF

I know most of the basics for this, but I have a question that I couldn't find the answer to. Forgive me if it has been asked, but I couldn't find it.

How do you attach the MAP sensor to the plenum designed for a MAF? Do you have to drill holes in the plenum or what?

I haven't actually seen the plenum yet, as I am slowly accumulating parts for an engine swap into my 91 V6. Since I already have the correct compuer (-prom) for MAP, I would rather use that. But the plenum setup I am getting is designed for the MAF sensor. Thanks in advance.

Depending on how large the sensor is (I dont know), you may be able to just relocate your MAT and stick it there. Otherwise drilling a hole in the plenum and tapping it isn't really much work.

Just use the MAP sensor bracket out of a TBI car that allows it to mount to the firewall.

The MAF plenums don't have the bosses (not enough "meat") to drill holes for the map sensor unless you use really shallow screws, or seal the screws to prevent vac. leaks.

Will the MAP sensor from a 305 TBI work?

It will, so will carb'd 3rd gens. I got mine from an LG4 or whatever thirdgen at the junkyard, it's just a stamped steel thingy that bolts under the brace bar that goes from the firewall to the fender.

What about the MAP from a '91 3.1L V6?

If it mounts in the same location I described above, it should work.

Any MAP sensor will work. They all give the same readings but
there are a few different mounting configurations. But yea, most
any sensor will work.

Hmm, gotta disagree with that.. all GM "blown" apps use 2 bar MAPs which will half the signal back to the ECM on a N/A car at the same kPa... sorry just have to give ya a hard time.

I have never worked with an SEEI or turbo car before. Do those
MAP's look the same as the normal ones. I think the Standard
book gives only one number for all non turbo type cars.

both 1 BAR and 2 BAR MAP's are identical. Just that the output is halved on the 2 BAR at the same kPa. cheers, Bob

viper (nice avatar btw),

if you are going to tee into a vacuum line, make sure you get the tee as close to the plenum as possible. Also make sure it's not tee'd into a line that is a vacuum leak, ie; cruise control or charcoal canister purge.

From the GMECM archives at diy-efi.org, the gurus seem to like to tee into the FP regulator line.

Good luck, I'm gathering parts for a MAF -> MAP swap too.

1 bar map

So to swap from MAF to SD I would need to get a 1 bar MAP sensor? Will any GM 1 bar Map work?

Pretty much any 1 bar MAF off a TPI, TBI, Carb, or v6 will work. It has to be a 1 bar.
