Problem with gear swap
I posted this on the tranny board, but I thought someone over here may be able to help as well
Any one had a problem doing a gear swap in an '89 10 bolt rear,
I was told by SLP that all late 80's 10 bolt rears had 28 spline axles so I bought a posi and gears for 28 spline axles, when we took the car apart, we found 26 spline axles.
Is this unique to the 89's, or did i get that one in a million odd ball car.
Oh yeah, the mechanic also said the ring gear was too big and was doubtful that it would fit inside the housing.
Anyone else ever run into this?
Thanks.

The axles swapped from 26 spline to 28 spline in the 10 bolt rears midway through the 89 model year, wich means they used up the pile of 26 spline stuff before they went into the 28.
So no, your car is not oddball. What SLP told you is also wrong, as the only cars garunteed to have a 28 spline axle is 90-92.
Do what I did, go pull the axles out of a 90-92 V6 car, and your gravy. They will fit just fine in your existing rear.
