Lots Of Money Invested And Still Not Happy!!

I have an 1985 TA, 305 w/ a Q-jet, 5-speed- iv had it since i was in high school and slowly graduated from one step to the next

year 1. complete tune up, new water pump, blah, blah, blah

year 2. 305 TPI w/ factory tpi wiring harness, headmann shorties and dynomax catback

year 3. custom cold intake w/ huge K&N screens taken out of M.A.F. ,air foil, ported plenum, runners, intake, heads-all gasket matched, adjustable regulator, rebuilt t-5 tranny, converted over to 10-bolt with 3.23(blew it up twice over summer-new auburn and now 3.42's), crane cam

this year--9.5-1 comp, new rings bearings, crank, crank scraper, 1.6 roler tip rockers, painless wiring harness, MSD coil, accel ignition module, accel wires, plugs indexed and cut back(so pretty much the engine is brand new this year) new 24 lb. accel injectors, and half the sensors-tps, iac, knock, coolant

now my probiblem is i cant get it idle below 1000, i got it down to 750 yesterday but i shut it off and restarted it and it went back to 1000. i adjusted my sensors-tps.iac-i let it get nice and warm, i put a vacume gage and it reads in the green.

i wrote to painless wiring for some insight and they were helpfull as a fart in a space sute

the reason i put a painless wiring harness in was with the factory harness the check engine was on all the time, i would check the code a got a code 12 w/ a key and "check wiring, bad connection" with a scanner

i do have 2 1/2 years selling part 2 years of electrical experiance and tons of automotive experiance

it would idle fine last year but i just cant get it down, i even popped out that lil cap and turned down the screw but to no avail

HELP FROM ANY OF YOU GUYS WOULD BE APPRECIATED, BUT PLEASE DONT PAINTRANIZE ME I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS S**T FOR A WHILE

BUT SERIOUSLY ----HELP ME!!!!!!---

what type of ecm and PROM are you using. year? maf? i had a similar problem just like you described. the idle would not drop below 1000. it turned out, after a new ecm, ALL sensors that the prom infact was bad. make sure that you have adjusted the min air per tech articles specs. good luck.

NOt sure of the Painless Harness wil let you...but...

Try the min idle setting procedure...i/e jump the A and B on the ALDL with the key on to extend the IAC (fully seated position) then disconnect the IAC connector.

Start the car, does it idle lower? Does it stay idling lower? If so, problem resides in eith the IAC, or factors controlling the IAC.

The IAC is basically a controlled vacuum leak to govern your isle RPMs, with the valve fully seated, there should be no "vacuum leak" thorugh the TB, hence you should be at minimum throttle...which you'd now adjust to about 500-600 RPMs, regardless of what the book says, your main goal os to adjust minimum idle to keep the engine idling, and at a value below the PROM's specified idle (about 700-750 rpms). So setting the min-idle to 600 should suffice.

If the idle speed doesn't drop below a 1000rpms, you now need to make sure the IAC is fuctioning (extending to the seated position), check to make sure the pintle on the IAC is clean, as well as the seat, and make usre the Throttle Bleades are not left open, causing more air in.

Only other comment I have is why are you running 24# injectors? Do you have a PROM burnt specifically for the Application?

Well, you don't really "adjust" the IAC, but reset it. That said, you still have a few issues...I'd like to ask:

Is the PROM for a 305 or a 350?

Do the RPM's stay stable at around 600 w/IAC disconnected?
