My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle
Thought you guys might be interested in my other project....Ive been a Nascar fan since I was 7 yrs old in '69 when on a family trip to Florida we stopped at Daytona Beach and (unknown to us) the town was getting geared up for the Firecracker 400 (now the Pepsi 400) the following week and I grew up going to short track races at Peterborough Speedway during my 20s......
Ive always loved 69 Chevelles and had one in the mid 80s as my summer car....I had it tricked out to look like a stock car..... I remember the whole Late Model field at Peterb being 68 to 72 Chevelles....I loved it
heres a pic of my Chevelle 1985, cammed 350, T-10 I had the springs cut radically and the steel fender lips cut out, the sheet metal removed and the lips re attached for a lowered stock car look....I also had a 80 Trans Am steering box and front swaybar for 'handling' lol....I even autocrossed it a couple of times.....it had 275 50 15 T/As on all four......got caught in a freak snowstorm in late Sept & with the big tires slid off the road at the bottom of a big hill and basically totalled the car....done! I should have left the damn car where it was and walked home as it all melted the next day....eff me!

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle
have wanted to recreate the chevelle ever since......bought this 1999 ex Winston Cup Monte Carlo roller from Andy Belmonts ARCA shop in Moorseville NC in 2007.....drove down and brought it home on a U Haul open trailer myself.....here it is in final livery as an ARCA car (where most old Cup cars end up) its a Hutch Pagan intermeadiate chassis......the car hit the back of someone on a restart and beat up all the soft stuff up front like the rad/oil cooler etc but never touched the frame.....Andy was going to fix it and race it again but then a bunch of top line old style cars came available when the Cup series went to the COT so this car sat doing nothing for awhile then went for sale....thats my mock up motor in it

I had this 69 Chevelle I bought off a guy in London....rough is an understatement but it came with a title.....the idea is to put the Chevelle body on the Nascar chassis and make a roadrace track day car out of it and later put some bare bones lights and stuff and have it barely street legal

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle
after hours and hours of cutting and fitting the body is where it basically needs to be.....the car has a oval set up in it right now, I'll take it to Peter Gibbons's race shop in Stouffville and have him put a roadrace set up in the car but I'll keep the oval stuff my buddy owns Sauble Speedway up in Sauble Beach (1/3 mi oval) and he says I can go up there and rip around on Fridays......I get the slicks for free from an Outlaw Late Model guy I know who likes to run up front....he goes through two sets per night on the local short tracks.
I have a 400 small block that I want to put a set of vortecs and a hot cam in as well as a street T-10 to get the car up and running.....the car has the sb2 motor mounts as well as all the dry sump lines and tank so one day who knows maybe a ex Busch 700hp 9:1 sb2 and a Jerico....but Im a long ways from that.....
but here is where the car sits today..the first shot shows how low the car is compared to my van....the roof hieght is about the same as my Iroc with the Pro Kit....the doors will open, the windows will work, it will have a roadrace production racer type doorbar set up in it.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle
Similar story ! Dad starting taking us to Daytona around 1970. We went every year to the Firecracker 400. I still have many of the posters and banners from the race. We would go around to the stores/hotels and ask them after the race. Got an attic full ! LOL. How times have changed. I remember sitting in those hot bleacher seats with the sun beating down. The night race is much more enjoyable. But I miss the old cars and drivers.
I had a '69 SS396 in High School (1979-1982). It was really nice and original...just a used car back then. They were a dime a dozen along with Camaro's and others. I started restoring it in the early 90's and wound up selling it for cheap money. I was just burnt out on it.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle
wow!...that IS similar....and 69 Chevelle too.....wow!
I know what you mean about just another used car.....I drove my Chevelle home for $3400 and thought that was alot for the car but it was what I wanted and the guy knew it so he wouldnt come down a penny haha
we never got to go to the race at Daytona but I did get this thing from the track that opened up like a map to this big poster and it had a picture of every driver and his car along with his hometown and some brief stats.....by the time we got all the way home I knew every car and driver lol.....that is where I got my first exposure to my favourite stock car driver of all time Cale Yarborough. D

That thing is pretty amazing. I cant even imagine the planning and rutts you hit getting that far. You seem to have that blind determination to attain your goals which is always a good push.
Is it just coincidence that the wheel base was basically the same? That chassis seemed to end up pretty nicely under where the chevelle wheels used to be.
Very cool.

I knew the Cup cars came in two sizes and I really wanted the Cup truck arm chassis....the Busch/Nationwide is 105 and Cup is 110" wheelbases, I measured the chevelle when I got it home and came up with 112"...I thought I could live with one inch less on either end of the car....so I had to track down a Cup car..too bad cause I could have got a smokin' deal on a Busch car from a guy in Quebec who ran the Busch North series but 5" shorter wouldnt work and that led to North Carolina and this car.
Width doesnt matter because stock car rims are available in one inch offsets from something like zero to 7" so I could make that work and its just cutting and working metal from there but I was pleasantly surprised how well the top of the cage tucks into the chevelles roof......
There is a PILE of work still to be done but it is just hours in the shop....all doable. Biggest hurdle left is Im worried that the inside front of the doors might hit the cage A pillar downtube when your trying to close it....I wont be able to tell for sure till I re install the doors but its going to be REAL close...not insurmountable but it would be nice if the doors just...closed
thanks for chiming in everybody its cool you guys "get it".....when I tell guys what Im doing they think Im full of it or they look at me like Im from Mars lol

Oh and colour...what do you guys think of either gloss black or satin black with chrome wheels for the street and the black wheels with the slicks for the track.

Definately flat black. Gloss black doesnt seem right on the look youre going for. Maybe gloss stripes if your plannning to do stripes.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle
Mocked up the rest of the car, glass front fenders, hood and bumpers, spent a couple of hours sanding and rattle canned a coat of flat black primer to make it look like a car and rolled it outside for some pics. Got a little more fender trimming to do but you get the idea. Its a road race Stock Car, the fenders are cut and the tires hang. It is exactly the way I envisioned it, I love the look and the flat black will def stay.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle
Very cool car. i raced a few or those at South buxton and Ridgetown. Sure brings back memories.
You said you were going to try and make it street legal. Let me know how that works out. We had a roll bar in our project car and when we had the car appraised for insurance they listed the roll bar on the appraisal. The insurance company would not insure it because it had a roll bar. Had to cut out the roll bar and get another apraisal done before we could get insurance.

best part is you dont have to fancy on the rims, the d holes look great and you can get them in black and chrome so should be cheap on that end

you obviously dont need the sprint cup wheels, they look the same as the basset d hole rims we use for dirt track and their on 60 for black 90 for chrome

I saw a street legal fully winged sprint car rolling into a car show yesterday in Garland Texas. I was so surprised by it that even though I had my camera in my hand, I didn't take a picture of it until it drove away. Good luck with your unique build!
