New Brakes

Man it's been quiet on here..

So I got my new C4HD front brakes this week from Ed Miller.
These things are HUGE 13x1.1". It'll be a tight fit in the 16" wheels, but they're supposed to go in there. Got the 1LE prop valve as well.

Also get a set of rear LS1 brakes that will be going on . They're from an 02 TA with 25k..12" rotors. It's an easy swap, just weld up the existing backing plate bolt holes and redrill to suit the 3rg gen axle. Also need to fab axle seal spacers for the 9 bolt. The parking brake MAY actually work after this swap!

I'll take some pictures and will get them up here.

I plan on getting the car out to the Calbogie track next summer.

Re: New Brakes

That's excellent! Should look and stop great now, not like stock at all

I've thought about getting brakes for years, mainly the Baer kit (Sport), but I just don't drive the car enough lately. Next summer (I know we all say this every year) we all HAVE GOT TO GET OUT TOGEATHER MORE!!!!!!
Then I would consider brakes maybe. And Ed Miller at that.

Get some pics (before/after) up so we can see. And comparison shots.

Re: New Brakes

I was under the impression that 12'' brakes were the biggest u could go with 16'' wheels. I need some new front brakes as well so i figured why not just upgrade 2 sumthing better while im at it. Ive got the ZQ8 wheels tho so im not sure about the fitments... Post pics of the progress...

Re: New Brakes

Neil;

Im trying to work something out with Ed for C5 brakes. DId you order everything directly from him? I was planning on just getting the brackets, spindles, etc... and getting the "heavy" off shelf parts locally to save a bit on shipping.

I gotta check those C4s out next time i see your car.

Re: New Brakes

In all the years of doing this I still haven't got round to upgrading the brakes. Still running the J65 setup and it has faded to nothing on me a few times at the track.

Having the Ronal Hawk rims hasn't helped much as the options for them are limited even though they're 17s.

May have to see what Miller can throw together for me one of these days. The 91/92 Firehawks had 13" Brembo on the front so something should fit w/out the caliper hitting the spokes.

Re: New Brakes

I am pretty sure the C4HD's are the same as the Brembo sport kit fronts..4 piston PBR caliper, directional vented rotors.. I have Brembo pads going in the front.

AK, I did order directly from Ed amd had the stuff shipped to Roethels in Ogdensburg. I told him I would not be sending back my spindles (he charges $50 for spindle cores) and he had no problem with it. It might be easier to get him to ship USPS to your door. Shipping cost me $45 to the border, one box was 70lbs and the rotor box was about 40lbs.

He's good to deal with although it took longer than I thought for him to ship as he's pretty busy.

George, there are some good brake fittment threads on the brake board, I'm sure you can get some info there.

Re: New Brakes

Yeah, I haven't looked at those fitment threads for awhile. I think C4 will fit the Ronals.

Brakes kinda got put on the back burner as the car has so many other issues - the 10 bolt is on it's way out now so I guess that's next.

Good idea to hang on to your old spindles - probably not worth shipping them and you never know if you might need them.

Re: New Brakes

The rest and the LS1 rears..
There's about 1/4" between the caliper and the rim, LOTS of room!

I think the car may stand on the front end with these..

Re: New Brakes

Wow! Just awesome!
I contacted Ed a couple of months ago to get the same front end kit. (and the 12" rear kit)
But my money got tied up. But I think I'm ready again. Too bad winter's around the corner.

PLEASE keep us updated on how it goes! And get pics with the setup and rims on the car!

Re: New Brakes

It will get a new disk/drum master and 1LE prop valve allowing more pressure to the rear brakes.

Re: New Brakes

i did this swap on my '90 it works great. I bought the spindles and hubs off of Ed and sourced the rest myself.

They are freaking HUGE rotors and fill the inside of my factory 3-bars completely. I have special pads (forget name), Vette HD calipers and braided lines. The difference in braking is unbelievable. There is zero fade and the pedal sensitivity is much greater.

so the '90 has factory 12s in the rear already. This is one of the best driveability upgrades I have done (next to the T5 swap).

The spindles pushed the front wheels out another 5/8s inch so I swapped the rear wheels with the front wheels to counter the unwanted offset. I used a '90 drum brake spacer to help the rear wheels (now on the front) clear the front calipers.

ended up with an overall wider track front and rear equal increase of 5/16s inch. the car handles great no complaints I highly recommend this upgrade. Braking is phenomenal.

oh yeah the '90 and up comes with the 1LE prop valve so no need to for to upgrade that piece.

pretty amazing upgrade

I did some tests last night. Sensitivity is way better I can brake to the limit and not lock up. improvement at all speeds. i really like how the brakes are at the top of the pedal now.

Re: New Brakes

I just installed a LT1 95 Z rear in my 88. The difference in braking is amazing. I still have the stock size front rotors but the are slotted and I have Brute Stop pads and flushing the brake fluid was a huge difference. I made 30 laps of the full track at Shannonville (4kms each lap) in 3 sessions (about 10 each) and no fade whatsoever. I am pleased with my brakes for once.
Glad to see more brake upgrades being done not just power.
Nice kit.

Attack the course hard enough and leave your braking late enough and you will get fade..lol

Depends on the course too though. Only place I get brake fade on the Mosport GP track is coming into Moss Corner but I've got it down so that the brakes go to nothing just as I hit my turn in point and then I don't need them again until the end the of the main straight so they've cooled down pretty good by that time.

Short tracks like Dungville or the Mosport DDT are the worst though for fade and tyre wear.

HUGE improvement!

Didn't realize how bad the old setup was until driving this one.

Re: New Brakes

Nice big brakes Neil, to help slow you down with that cam/heads. Someday I might put better brakes on too, but someday I might also drive it as well, to justify putting any $ into it.

yeah I used to spend time wowing at 0 to 60 (new cam and heads this spring)

now I spend time doing 60 to 0's seeing how close to lock up I can get. couple of times under 110 feet

C4 HDs are awesome. 140kmh to 0 three times in quick succession zero fade.

oh yeah - dumped the sportlines and I think braking got better. Handling sure did. I put the factory springs back. I am in BC now and have some some really great local twisties mapped out. And on those roads if your brakes are not tops you are over the edge...
