If you wanted to try to do something about it you could get an Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator and a Rich/lean meter. But You should have pretty good gas milage for a third gent: Tpi and manual. It couls also be that we have kinda a paabolic tank and it goes down quicker on the last 1/2 tank than the quarter. Out Van REALLY does that... it is annoying.

Your not driving it in the upper RPMs too much are you? ie. driving at 4000 rpm while cruising down the street in first or second gear, or going down the highway in 3rd at 100+ kms.

Or perhaps you've got a fuel leak. Do you smell gas while driving or see any puddles around the car when its parked.

Maybe you should swap engines with Slade...lol
You think yours is bad, try a 650 cfm dual feed carb and see how fast you go through gas Oh well, I have fun burning it up...

My econo-setup bird (305/auto) actually gets better mileage than my Jimmy (262(4.3L)/auto), which gets around 16-16.5 mpg. The 'bird must be around 17, maybe higher. Your car just passed emissions with no problems so I doubt it's a problem with the car...

But it's an import and it's previously been established on this board that all imports are junk.

Alex, has the car always been "bad" on gas or is this just something it's started since you pulled it out for the summer?

My 305tpi was awesome on gas. The only time it got bad on gas was when my MAF started acting up and they couldn't find the problem until it died. It was horrible on gas throuout that process.

Maybe I am just imagining it I don't know, but it seems I fill up the gas tank everyday. I just set the trip meter so let's see how much I actually get...

I don't really keep the revs up, I try to keep them low since it's more economical. I also drive like a granny nowadays cuz I can't afford to repair anything.

Only thing I know about my car is I still think part of my exhaust is loose, or my muffler is broken, or perhaps my cat is broken. I'll get that checked out.

Hey those new Sunflowers are not too bad. I just drove one back and forth to the cottage as a rental someone got and I think I only put $20 in, I really like the Ecotec. Nice economy and powah. Well power for a 4 banger, maybe with a manual it could be considered kinda, maybe, somewhat fast. Lmao.

Alex!! Does it feel as though it has lost some power at all?? If so most likely a Cat problem. Are you smelling and gas?? Possible fuel leak?? Or maybe you have a phantom siphoner that fallows you around!

Sunoco 94- let's assume you paid about 80 cents a litre in the last week.

For $20.00 that equals 25 litres to go 120 km, or 20.8 litres per 100km, or 10.9 miles per gallon.

Now- have you run the numbers accurately- i.e. fill up tank completely- drive, then fill up the tank completely again to determine exactly how much gas you used to go xx kilometres? If not- your actual consumption estimate will not be very good as gas guages are notoriously inaccurate.

But- let's assume you're numbers are correct for the most part- 10.8 mpg is obviously too low (whereas normal city driving would get you about 14-15mpg). Exhaust leak could contribute to this- also using 94 octane gas in an engine that's not got a higher compression ratio or extremely advanced timing nets you nothing- you could probably do just as well on mid-grade or 92 octane. If you've got more octane than the burn requires- you won't burn all the fuel and mileage will go down (incomplete combustion).

I agree on the Sunoco 94 octane being a bit much for a stock engine. You can probably get by just fine on 87 octane (but to be safe check your owner's manual and see what is suggested for your octane usage). But I might go one higher to the mid grade 89 octane. The higher octane 92-94 is probably just a waste of money. As it is probably creating a slower more incomplete burn in your current setup.

Best thing to do is experiment. run the mid grade 89 octane and see how it runs, and I definately think there is something wrong because it sounds like your burning too much fuel, or it is leaking out a little.

You guys do not need Sunoco 94. You don't even need to use 94 with most aftermarket chips. No to mention that Sunoco 94 isn't all it's made out to be. I got better mileage than that in my car. Does it seem to run ok other than the bad fuel economy?

What's your setup? Popping from exhaust can be bad timing, a grounding ignition wire, too rich a mixture (i.e. stuck choke on a carb, bad 02 sensor on FI), or a leak close to y-pipe/headers.

Fix your exhaust issue and see what changes.

Iroc 2NV that is good gas mileage. I get about 400km mainly highway on a full tank. I could squeeze 425km out of it but wouldn't push it much after that.

Alex, based on what I have seen on previous discussions on mileage, yours is way too low.

Need more info as everybody says, is it running rich?? etc.
thanks
Scott

That could be hard gas in your cylinders and when it ignites it pops.. I am starting to think that GM made there chips to act really rich.. I have my injector constant at 21.2 for my 19lbs injectors and now it run between 125-135 on the BLMS and now I don't have that popping sound anymore
So that is what your popping sound is.. did you check your wires or spark plugs for a miss or anything?

Most of Sunoco's fuels don't have a whole lot of gasoline in them. They contain alot of additives and whatever else they pretend is gasoline nowadays. Just my $.02 and that's probably all it's worth

Eric is exactly right. you guys are overpaying for something you dont need. set your timing to so that you are getting max performance and then use the lowest octane you can without knocking/detonation.

alex, it is most likley you timing is set at stock.....i am sure 89 octane would be plently if the timing is stock.

iroc2nv....invest in some parts that actually make your car fast before loading up on the "high performance" gas

My owner's manual specs 89 octane for my '90, so I'd imagine most TPIs should be comparable. I usually run 90 octane (the closest Sunoco has) and I get decent mileage.
