oil changes ? how often

I try to be diligent about oil changes -- especially cause I beat on the old 305 from time to time. I use 5w-30 Mobile1 plus one liter of Lucas. I think I changed it last May. I've put about 5-6k on the car since.

Usually I change the oil as soon as it turns from gold to black on the dip-stick which with synth and Lucas can be several months driving or about 6-7k. Not a very scientific method eh ? It recently turned black so it is time to change the oil again -- according to my hillbilly sense.

I always get the suspension greased at oil change which is something the lube shop throws in. I figure I'll change out the anti-freeze and get the rear fluid changed again too -- thats something I'll do.

I'm curious what everyone else uses, how often do you change your oil, why ? Do you do anything else at the same time ? Any special tricks ?

How about opinions --> is there anything better out there for a sbc roller motor than a Mobile1/Lucas combo ? I usually use the GM stuff off-the-shelf for the rear end.

adious,
RP.

I change my oil every 3000 kms on the dot. I am getting synthetic oil put in for my next change.

They always lube up the suspension as well. Um.. yeah I don't know what kind of oil they put it I don't pay attention :P

I change my oil every 3k to 4k kms or 3 months, whatever comes first. I use Mobile1 15W50 in the hot months and Castrol Syntec 5W30 every other time.

I use 5w30 castrol gtx synth about every 5k or when the car has been sitting for awhile. As for if i do anything else at the same time, I change the filter.... heheh. Tricks, nothing special but after I drain the oil I put the plug back in a few threads and pour quite a bit of dino oil down there to get and pull the plug to get all that heavy crap and old oil thats still left on the bottom out. Or you can do it with the plug out and watch it go from black to gold

magnets ?

What about those magnets on the oil filter ??? I've seen magnets on golfer's wrists (same people buy hair tonic hahahahahaha) but an oil filter ? Saw it in Hot Rod mag for $59 USD. I always figured thats what filters DID -- caught junk... why use magnets ???

I think theres a magnet on the oil pan... Im sure those wouldnt hurt but in my opinion its more gadget than function. Like you said its supposed to filter that out why should it need a magnet...?

Every 3 months reagardless of the KM's...and seeing as it's very rare for me to hit the 3-4000 km mark before then. But I would never let it go more than 5000KM between changes.

Since mine is a daily driver, I always keep an eye on mileage.

Every 5000 kms or 3 months, more often than not every 5000 kms...

From July 21 to Aug 20, less than a month I raked in 5000 kms...

For oil, I've always used Quaker State 5w30 or Castrol Synthetic, although the Castrol is like 5w40 or 50 I think... I went back to Amsoil synthetic recently since I found a place that I could get it here.

As for filter, its been the standard quaker state filter, but since track and dyno day are coming, I got a k&n oil filter to keep it clean till I gun the engine for those days.

It doesn't hurt to use regular oil, but synthetic has more of a longevity advantage.

Slade: Amsoil? Where man...is it easy to get and how much? Very good oil but not easy to source.

And just a word of advice...Quaker State filters are made by Fram, stay VERY clear from these. They are not good quality filters at all. Sticker with AC Delco...you can get them at Wallymart for basically the same price as the Fram.

Quaker state hasn't been bad, its not exceptional performance filtering either, have noticed fine particulate in the oil that the filter should have gotten, that's why I snagged a k&n filter for the hell of it this time around. I take them as they come... I never bought filters from walmart, if they got ac delcos I'll probably go back to them on my regular basis...

As for amsoil, karbelt has them. Fisrt canadian store I've found to stock the stuff but it comes at a premium in price too.. the owner of the store I get it from is good though and he swings me discounts whenever I come in so it turns out better for me to get from there than at ct for synthetics.

83 TA, LG4, 200C, J65.

Crap Tyre 10W30 and their truck filter which I think is made by Fram. Changed about every 2-3 K when the car was a daily driver but stored winters.

That said though the car's got 162K on it now and there's blue smoke comming out real good at idle as well as the usual puff at start up.

So the the regular oil changes using this stuff has not contributed to the life of the motor that much although I do drive it fairly hard.

I haven't changed my oil in two years maybe 20,000kms and the darn thing is still running great.

I just top it up when it goes down below add maybee once every 3 monts or so. haven't changed the Canadian tire oil filter in 2 years either.

Are you guys gasping yet?

Oh yeah I had to go in for drive clean test last week and it passed first run through.

I have been trying to blow this motor up for over a year now and even just standing on the gas with the clutch in doesent seem to do it. Engine has a revlimiter on it and it bounces of the rev limiter at about 6,500 rpm.

2.8 liter V6 with 236,000 miles (Alabama Car) 424,000 kilometers on it.

If I can just get this engine to die I can start my frame up restoration and 355 heart transplant.

Hey maybee I can get her to pop at St Thomas Those 17 second quarter miles are really tough on her. LOL
