Dyno Day in Kitchener
To anyone interested,
I have booked the dyno at Forrest&Forrest Racing on Sat. June 15th at 12:30PM. We will have the dyno for 4 hrs at a cost of $373.75( $325 + GST&PST). If we can get atleast 6 cars the cost would be $63 each.Four hours will allow those that want to make some changes or fine tune their cars and get a few pulls on the dyno to see the gains. I will need to have definite confirmations, as the cost will be divided equally. It would not be fair to the rest if someone doesn't show. You can confirm with me by e-mailing or Private Message to me.The more the merrier.

I have a feeling that I have 3 cars right here... my car, buddy's SHO and my other buddy's Civic Si. And don't laugh at the Civic.... he is only 2 car lengths behind me at 400metres

Hey all, the responses are great. I will post directions a week in advance. It is actually very easy to get to, if you are coming via the 401 east or west.

Hey all, I have had some confirmations already, but I will need to limit the participants to 10. 10 people gives everyone a chance to get a few pulls in.As of right now, I have 5 confirmed and a few maybes. It will be first come, first served, so if you want in for that day, let me know asap.

I could personally use a mechanic to figure out how to tighten my windows... to think I can tear a motor down and rebuild it but can't figure windows for the life of me.. actually the prob is I can't take the panel off without fear of breaking something.

As it stands there are only 5 confirmed. If you want to come, like I said, first come first served. If you confirm with me , I will include you. However, please note what I said in the post, everyone that confirms will be expected to show up. This is only fair to the rest of the guys.
Let me know asap.

Do I have to toss an e-mail in to you or is my confirmation post not ok? I'll be there for sure.. less my tranny breaks or something. I have it due for a fluid change, oil and tranny anyways which will be done sometime next week.

No, you are confirmed Slade1. I just talked to Forrest&Forrest and they said that I can shorten the dyno time if I have to, and I can cancel on short notice, if the weather is bad. Otherwise we are there for 4 hrs at the price quoted above.

I'm still in.
No one else around here wants to go?
I don't think it matters what you're driving- you want to bring mom's minivan to the dyno- ok- it's your money, right?
This would certainly answer the question for people in the other post- "What's you HP?"...

I know I don't have a power house putting out all kinds of HP, but I still want to know where it stands.I want to try a couple of things, like running with my stock airbreather and then try it again with my K&N's to see what kind of gain I achieved, that and maybe play with the timing a bit.
If anyone is interested, there is a great sports bar not far too away. It's called the Edelwiess Tavern and it's on the way back to the 401.We can go there afterwards, for a drink or a bite to eat.

I'm all for the see what you got deal. Once and for all we can get some real numbers in and even test what does what for performance. Take the simple K&N change... what is the real world gain from a paper filter? We can compare pure stock setups with slightly modified to downright overhauled setups. We all just want to know so its not a I guess this or I guess that. Another thing is we can figure out which is worth the cash and effort. Take things like wires, caps and plugs. Can be costly (MSD set over an Accel set) and time consuming (Passenger side with A/C ring a bell?) and for what a less than 1% gain over another brand that is 99% cheaper? Who feels smart then...? It'll save our future money, it'll help others and we show those manufacturers that for all their glitter and glory, their products are worth squat.
I just have one condition before I go though... please tell me there are at the least 6 confirmed 100000000000% sure they will go. I'd hate it to be like 2 ppl footing a fairly unecessary cost of $150 dollars.

Not to worry Slade1. 16th Owner (Martin) just confirmed tonight so that will make 6 of us so far.Two of us live here in town.
Believe me, I do not want any of us to have to pay for someone not showing up. Forrest&Forrest seem reasonable about it. They said I can shorten up our time on the dyno if I have to.Unfortunately, I cannot control what everyone does, if they don't show, well I hope they have a legit reason. I will e-mail everyone with my cell phone #, in case someone gets lost.

The one you are probably thinking of is Marken Performance on Manitou Dr. They don't have a dyno.
The Edelweiss is on the corner of Manitou and Homer Watson. You will pass it on your way to the meet. I don't have time right now, but I will post directions tonight.

Ok my g/f's brother is coming aswell.. so that is 92Zeddar plus one guest.. he drive a 89 GTA with trick flow heads and cam... and I might have one more.. 72 chevy shortbox with a 400 smallblock done to the hilts... but for now it is me and my g/f's brother for sure....
and another question once we have our permant number of cars are we working it as everyone gets so much time on the dyno to test. So that we are not going on or off the dyno all the time..?
I think that is how they usually do it but just asking.. I am new to this gig...

I figured the sequence would be we do a few runs, 10 mins for probably 4 say with minor tweaks, then we take it off, major tweak the hell out while someone else gets a go at it and cycle through in an order. Per car it'll only take an avg 16 sec per dyno run to get a decent torque/hp curve. With only 7 people, this is plenty of time (4 hrs) to get some numbers in and see what quick variations like stock filter vs K&N and RAM air vs thermac air will do to an engine.

I am new to this gig as well, so what I hope will happen is that everyone gets equal time on the dyno. From what the guy told me, it only takes a few minutes on the dyno to get a reading, the most time consuming part is tuning. I think what will happen is that everyone will get the initial run with whatever setup you want to run and then as others are "tweaking" their cars, some one can be on the dyno. I will stop in there this week and talk to them and see how they usually set it up.
On another note,if anyone is interested and it's a nice day, everyone is welcome to come back to my place for a B.Y.O.B barbeque.I only live a few minutes away. Nothing fancy, just burgers and sausage. If the weather is blah,we can go to the Edelweiss, instead. Girlfriends and wives are welcome, if you want.

Ok farm-kid/88camaro, you are in.
I think that with this group, we should have enough, now.
Confirmed are:
Kevs87TA
TriggerGTA & guest
Eric2ndGen
92zeddar & guest
16th Owner
farm-kid/88camaro
Slade1
This will give everyone approximately 26 minutes (averaged out 4hrs /9 cars). I personally only need to do two pulls as I just want to get a base number.
The cost will be approximately $43.00 each. I will be heading over there today to talk to them.I want to see if they have any ideas how to organize the group, so that everyone gets equal time.I will post later.

Well I went to Forrest & Forrest today. They say that time could be a little tight with nine cars, however, I don't need that much time myself,I just need to get a baseline as to where my car is at. The guy said that there wouldn't be alot of time to monkey around with alot of changes. With each pull, you will get a graph plotting out your HP and TQ and a print out of all the numbers. I guess we will have to see how it goes. This is the problem with being new at this, I don't really know what to expect. The place is pretty plain, I wasn't sure if I was at the right place at first. I plan on getting there about 12:00 PM and park near the entrance, so look for a black '87 Trans Am.

"A little tight" no ****- 26 minutes for 9 cars and give-or-take 5 minutes to load up a car & move in/out.
Translate this: clock starts- 1 car in- 5 minutes + dyno time (let's say 10 minutes), load next car in- 5 minutes + 10 again- that's 4 cars per hour. Therefore 2 hours and 15 minutes later everyone has been on ONCE and by the end of it all- 16 cars have been on- i.e. not even twice for each.
Let's be optimistic and say everyone gets on twice- where's the advantage to this now? It may only be $42.00 per car- but you only get 1 retune after the first run in preparation for the second- and that's it-go home- nice having you...
Not to be funny- but over an hour drive from where I am to Kitchener for 2 dyno runs (I'll spend more on gas to/from and on dyno than the actual dyno runs cost themselves) hardly makes this worth my while...
Consider this a 'maybe' I'm not going to show at this point...'maybe' when it was planned for 6 cars this was a good idea.

If you wish to back out, that is fine. I don't have a problem with that. Fact is, I will take your "maybe I'm not going to show" as a definite "no". That will leave us eight, and if time becomes a factor, I will only do one pull just to see where I am.
Another time maybe. If anyone else wishes to back out, you must let me know TODAY!

Just 1 dyno run is ok for me. Even with setup it'll only take 10 mins at most for a run, meaning I could actually get 3 runs in there on 1 load up. Remember a single run won't last more than 20 secs on the slowest car, a few mins to check data, change an item (but what could you do on the engine when its HOT???) So being realistic A few baseline passes would only take 10 mins, and if we work together on this maybe less since we can cut the setup time down with more hands helping on the setup. Even if u f up a run, you instantly know its f-ed up and <30 secs later can do another pass. I think 2 full sets per car is well worth it. First attempt = what your car runs, 3-4 passes 15 mins spent on dyno probably Take it off, next person... for 1 hour get to figure out how to improve car and not burn self on hot engine in process lol. Then take another shot and see if it makes a difference.
I'm an hour's drive too and gas wise I use 94 sunoco and that only costs roughly $30 and on my setup takes a little over 1/8 of a tank to get there (if I drive like a demon it'll be 1/4 tank) I know cuz I've done a lot of drives to Kitchener/Waterloo and I do the standard Brampton to downtown Toronto drive. Lotsa traffic and 100km = 1/4 tank, no traffic = 1/ 8tank which I'm quite proud of myself for the efficiency of my car.

Lotsa traffic and 100km = 1/4 tank, no traffic = 1/ 8tank which I'm quite proud of myself for the efficiency of my car.

If there is enough that are willing to brave the elements, and don't mind a little rain on their cars, I don't see a reason why not, however, I will be evaluating the situation tomorrow morning, and if there is heavy rain, then I will cancel if that is the general consensus. Damn weather anyhow. Check back here tomorrow.

I keep forgetting my car is a daily driver while you guys are verging on hot rods. Not that I'm against that, I'm all for designing a kit car later in life based of the LS6 when it becomes as illustrious as the thirdgen.
I am in as long as including me there is 6.
The forecast is rain for tomorrow. Rain here, rain in Kitchener rain rain rain. I drive in rain. I drive in snow. My car is always good to go.

I plan on coming out as well. Hopefully if it rains, it's not to hard.
Among my things "to do", fixing the wipers is still on the list.
Guess I'll stack some big pillows, with the roof off.

Good enough, so far there has been no rain this morning. The forecast for today says that there will be sunny breaks with a 40% chance of a thunderstorm this afternoon. I will be there around 12:00P.M.
My cell # is (519)721-4306. See ya'll
BTW If all eight of us show, the cost will be $47.00 each.
