Re: The best gears for street racing????
i dont know about you, but to get to the races in dallas you have to drive a while on the highway, so anything above 3.73 is out of the question. plus, with even 3.73s you are goign to be around 3500 rpms at 70 mph. i think some 3.23s would be the best bet. still pull good through the top end.

3.73 is probably the best compromise, but don't go with them if you do daily highway driving. I'm pretty happy with 3.23's.

regarless of track or street racing, you need gears that best fit your engine/trans combo, if you have a mild or basically stock engine a 3.23 or 3.42 will be your best choice, i more heavly built engine with a nice stall about 2,300-2,800 would like a 3.42-3.73 gear, a big cammed, ported or aftermarket hedded engine with a 3,000 or so stall likes a 3.73-4.33 but putting too big of a gear on a car that cant handle it will make the car SLOWER then if it had a 2.xx gear or low numericle 3.xx

If you are still running the stock L03 cam, then I wouldnt go any higher than 3.23's. Keep in mind that the 700r4 has a pretty short first gear anyway...so you really shouldnt need too much more. I have 3.27's (stupid 9 bolt) and love them.

I have 3.42s in both my current 87Z and my old 86 IROC. I think either the 3.42s or 3.23s are about the best compromise. I also find myself racing from highway rolls quite a bit, and with the infamous 700r4s that won't hit 4th gear at WOT the extra mph 3.42s afford you is nice. Also, just cruising the RPMs are nice and tolerable, while still giving you the gearing to get going plenty quick.
3.73s on most cars will just help you have more traction problems launching, 3.42s are good enough down low, yet still good up top. My vote is for them...

find out what you have now, its its a WS-6 car then your probley have the 3.23's and i would stick with them. 3.73 will give you no performance gain. if you do have a 2.xx gear go with a 3.23 a cam swap will also make a BIG improvement in performance.

I think the above statement brings up a good point... if you're going to run low profile tires, you will get a lower final drive ratio so to speak which may make 3.73's liveable. I run 26" tires which put me at 55 around 1900 RPM...
I have to ask one question though, are those 25" tires stock, and if not have you calibrated the speedometer correctly?

street races are very short, most barely go 1/8 mile. so hook is step one and then as much gear as you can get. a lot of the serious regulars in philly run 4.88 and 5.18's to give you an idea.

I am looking to do the same as you. A friend of mine has 3.73's adn he runs great, he is upping it to a 4.10. I think that is too much and a 3.73 is too little. I am going to get the inbetween a 3.90 gear. Richmond makes one and I am going to grab it. The best of both worlds. I looked it up and with my five speed I will run 2, 800rpm at 76 mph that not that bad. I think
