For what its worth, here is a dyno of a 01' 1.8T Golf with a chip that pulls lower numbers than mine. It isn't the best dyno, but its a good basis for what our cars can do with just a chip.
Just to show I'm not full of it, I'll offer any one of you a test drive in my car. I'm sure any other SERIOUS 1.8T enthusiast would do the same. I only ask that I get to check out your car too as I don't get a chance to drive V8s these days.
One more thing, I apologize for some of the VW trolls that popped up on here with nothing coherent or logical to say.

Wouldn't you just rather get a boost controller? Then you can double your psi or even more. That does sound like a lot for a chip, but it makes sense since most of the horses are made from boosted psi. That's pretty nice for a V dub but they're just not my cup of tea. If some of you VW guys plan on staying here, now that we have like 10 on this site, lay off the insults of the f-body. I'm sure a lot of us know that some VW's can be made fast but so can any car if money is put into it. Nice talking to you all. Eric

Boost controllers are a good way to add boost the 1.8T motor. But, if you don't add more fuel with the boost controller, your engine could be prone to detination. That's why the chips are good buys. They rework the fuel maps, increase the boost and still maintain driveability. Also, boost isn't infinitely available. The stock turbo on the 1.8T can handle only so much before it can't spin anymore.

There is some good information here, while there is alot of idiotic misinformation in this topic and its getting locked before anything else goes on.
If u guys are going to come to this site to give information thats good, but don't come here and say all kinds of stupid BS that holds no merit at all.
