Car: 1986 Camaro Z-28
Engine: Chevy ZZ4
Transmission: Select Built 700R4
Axle/Gears: Moser Axles / 3.73 Richmond Gears
Even the late 70 early 80 Z-28's were kind of dogs so I would guess it's no rocket. To beat a stock 3rd gen is no great accomplishment so don't judge by that. However, you could easily make that car alot faster or buy something else. Depends on what you want how much you want to spend.

They're no rockets thats for sure, but very easy to upgrade. I'd assume they're slower than 3-Gs cause they weigh more and that was before they really figured out how to make HP despite emissions rules.

haha..slow doesn't begin to describe those cars. My friend had an 81 berlinetta with a vette 350 motor in it and it was a real dog. It couldn't come close to beating my old 305 sport coupe and my old SC was one of the slowest v8 thirdgens made. And when I got my IROC even in it's stock form I would beat him by buslengths.

the camaros were really a joke back then even said with the z28's as they had no performance options like the firbirds and no WS-6 (firebird only) most likly its got 2.41 gears, an auto with a near 4,000 lb car isnt really the best setup, but the 77-79 400 WS-6 T/A's and formulas were solid mid high 14 second cars right off the show room floor, not too bad for being in the worst leg of the smog era

"z28's had no performance options like the firbirds and no WS-6 (firebird only)"

LOL, what are u talking about they had No performance options and only Firebirds did!?!? The only thing they had were more engine choices. Camaros had 3 engines to choose from that year (obviously depending on what model u wanted) and Firebirds had 6, 2 being Chevy engines and only 2 being built by Pontiac.

WS6 suspension?? Ever heard of Z28 Suspension?? LOL!!

good *** are those cars slow my SC raced my friend's '79 berlinetta and i beat him by bus lengths, i tried driving his car one time and even with torque breaking it, i couldn't make the car peel out. It felt like a honda accord with the AC on full blast.

the 77-81 T/a's had WS-6 with the close ratio steering, big *** front and rear bars and 4WD brakes, none of which was avalible with the camaro, the bird in 79' had MANY more engine choices (400 pontiac, 403 olds, 301 pontaic v-6 buick and 305 chevy in smog areas) camaro's biggest engine was only the 350, camaro have the advantage? i think not

LOL T68, I never said the Camaro had the advantage at that time. I already know about the engines as said in my other post.

I agree with u about the Brakes, but the Z28 and WS6 Suspensions were nearly the same, if not the same, getting the better stabilizers and absorbers also.

My dad used to have a 79 Berlinetta with a 305, it got good gas mileage, was reliable, but I drove it once or twice before the tranny finally went at 300,000 miles, and it was sloooooowwww.

i have a 80 formula and know a few people with a 77, and 80 z-28's the front bar is the same size as the stock T/A/formula bar, the rear also, that was the pro of the t/a formula was the ws-6 package that was not avalible for camaro at all, they had no big rear bar, 4WD or close ratio steering. herb adams (suspention master) was working with pontiac at the time to make the WS-6 Package. i know also pontiac could have factory hurst shifters for both the auto and 4-speed in the 77-81 years not camaro also, pontiac also has allways had a partnership with hurst.
