1966 Mustang vs me

I got a friend whos fixing up a 66 mustang and I assume one of these days we will line up.

Hes car: 1966 Mustang 289 3 speed (not the best of shape..its been sitting for about 5 6 years but does run)

My car: 1988 L03 122,*** auto (little mods i have in sig) and I'll be putting headers on this winter

Where do I have my best chance if any at all?
I've asked this before, but if I could line up with him with a 1976 L48 4 (32,***)speed I would win no?

I used to have a 66 mustang with a stock 69 302, a 1988 T5, 2.73 gears, and a 2bbl. Taht car was not a speed demon to say the least, but I raced a Civic once and beat it. I would say you should win.

well
i suppose it would depend on whether that 289 is High Performance or not...
if not, you'll win
if it is, then i'm not so sure...
run him and see

If it's bone stock it's not very fast. They respond really well to mods, but still...a stock 289 isn't making much power.

I would wait till after you bolt on the headers to be safe. The 289 is a high 16 second car at best.

btw...if he needs any help with that thing tell him to shoot me an email. I used to have a '66 hardtop with a bunch of goodies before I got into late model performance.

Ok, I will Nic. He just picked up new fenders for it...and he is having some1 do some frame work on it. He just picked up a 305 which for some reason hes putting more work into that POS then he is his mustang .

Man I miss my 66 coupe. If I were him I would spend my time and money on the Mustang, and forget the 305. No offense to 305 owners, but in the end I feel he has more potential with the Mustang (not necesarily with the 289) than the 305. I want my 66 BACK!!!

Stock that car comes with a 289 2bbl. and 2:7x gears. Which I doubt will be slow. I would say around 16's, because that car if it has no Powersteering and all the other deletes only weighs 2400lbs. My friend has the same year with a rebuilt 289 4bbl., and exhaust. He ran a 14.6 with stock gears, probably in the high 13's now with 3:55s.

I'm 100% with you on this one! Hardly a day goes by that I don't wish I still had mine, but I was going off to college in the mountains and a 33 year old car wasn't going to cut it up there.

My sister's ex boyfriend had a '65 hardtop w/289 and a 4 barrel holley. I think he took it to the track once and ran somewhere in the 15's. Other than the carb I do belive it was all stock.

I never had a chance to run mine since most of the time I owned it consisted of doing major upgrades on the front suspension and brakes, but I was told it was a 12 second car with the mods done to it. Like I said...they respond VERY well to mods like most of Ford's windsor engines do.

Oops, I'm not sure whether it would matter or not, my friend's is a 65 not 66. Oh well, just thought I would correct the mistake.

My inclination is to say they were rated at 215 hp for the 2 barrel and 225 hp for the 4 barrel, but I could be off.

I found some statistics for 1966 Mustangs...

6-cylinder: 120 horsepower.
2bbl 289- 200 horsepower.
4bbl 289- 225 horsepower.
4bbl hi-po 289- 271 horsepower. (K-code)

I was telling him if his friend has a K code motor, to watch out. Those are the fast Mustangs of the era, but they have their drawbacks...One thing that could make him lose is the fact that the K code has solid lifters, which means it's valves are going to need to be adjusted almost all the time. I really doubt it's a K-code though, because I thought it wasn't offered with a 3-speed, only the M-10 toploader 4-speed.

The K-code is also pretty rare.

Most K-codes are spotted and restored, so he probably doesn't have one, but with some money, time, and effort that car could be pretty quick. Ahhhhh, I miss the smell of non-catalitic converters on a carbbed 2bbl, that would always let me know I had a unique car. I want that '66 back!!!
