Got to see a new Lightning race
Local VP fuels distributor bought a brand new Ford Lightning and had it at the track yesterday. Showroom quality, nothing done to it. Calgary's altitude is 3500 feet and the density altitude yesterday was between 3200 and 3900 feet. That's fantastic air for Calgary. The Lightning dialed in at 13.77. Quick enough to run in Pro ET in a stock factory truck.
Too bad ford had to use a supercharger to get that kind of performance.

87 IROC-Z SuperPro ET Bracket Race Car
461 naturally aspirated Big Block
Best ET on a time slip: 11.242 altitude corrected to 10.69
Best MPH on a time slip: 121.52 altitude corrected to 127.76
Altitude corrected rear wheel HP based on power to weight ratio: 504.5
Best 60 foot: 1.546
Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

It's a 5.4.
As far as the displacement thing goes, Ford just put in the engine that they found best suited to be in the cars. Its their own fault if they arent as fast

Now wait one second....I know most people here hate Fords, but I happen to love all kinds of fast cars. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but wasnt the 5.0 GT in the 80's faster than our cars? Thats pretty much the only thing FOrd had ever done right for a change. Go read the magazine articles on this site....5.0 LX's and GT's win just about all of 'em. It wasnt until we came up with the late model L98 (91-92) and LT1's that we started winning. And yes, the Lightning does need a Eaton-Roots type supercharger to get that kind of performance (380hp, 440lbs tq), but we're talkin a 4700lb truck here...i dont exactly remember the 454SS being a speed demon without a supercharger either.

We could have kept up with The ford's if we got factory headers and factory dual exhaust. If we got those from the factory instead of having to shell out a hell of a lot of money we would be smoking them in the straights the corners and the stop signs.
