3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

So, its only 30 days till i get my license and I'm going to be picking up my 86' Camaro Z28 from within the next week or so. I'm just waiting till the paper all get transferred over.

Now, a lot of guys in my school have been saying that Camaro's and Firebird's are crap and that i should have gotten a Jetta or some other Volkswagen. I dont really believe they are faster then 3rd Gens but...What do you guys think? A couple of them have Mark 2 and 3 Jetta's.

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

All I can say is that before the turbo went on the 305, my GTA would get smoked by quite a few local Volkswagon's. What are your mods....?

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

It's all stock as of now. Though, in the summer my dad and i are taking out the 305 and putting a 350 that we have in with some mods. I'm still trying to figure out though if my 305 Tbi has the 165 hp or 190 hp motor.

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

Tpi 305s paired with an auto have the 190 hp engine. They run around a 15.5 1/4 stock I believe. I don't know what the tbi specs are, but I believe they run around a second slower. 165 sounds around right though. Are these new Jettas? The last model was a chick car imho.

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

All I know about it is I have my T/A and my girlfriend has a turbo diesel jetta. I can't see making that kinda trade even if the jetta turned a better quarter mile. I also have to mention, and this is just my opinion from when I was in high school about 2 years ago, most of the jettas or hondas or w/e the other kids wanted to run had about 3-4 times more money invested in their car than I did... of course it would be faster.

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

Which model Jetta and year? They have many different models like 1.8T and VR6 (my friend has the latter with a turbo... V6 turbo in a volks and it makes 400whp with 21lbs of boost).. Really depends which jetta..

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

When I turned 16 I would of been excited just to get a camaro, it didn't have to be fast or anything. A fast car and 16 year old driver sometimes don't match to well.

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

My MK-V GTI is only good enough for a 14.4. And that is a 2.0T motor, those guys are most likely running the old 8 valve engines...Unless they have them stripped to the pans, you should be able to beat them. Flip your air cleaner when it comes time to race and you will probably WIN.

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

A TBI 305 stock is a slow car no matter what you are racing. No offense.

Most modern V6 cars and a lot of the 4 bangers can seriously walk your car so dont get too upset when you do lose to cars you feel shouldnt be winning, and dont act like an *** before hand or you'll look that much worse.

Remember you got the car because it's the car you want, not because it's faster or better than brand X.

And please do your racing at the track.

The kid that i know has from what i know a 90's Volkswagen Mark 2 or 3. The VW seems fast. And it doesnt matter how fast my camaro is now because my dad and i are going to throw a 350 in it in the Summer.

Do you frequent E-Town or Atco? A few of us run at both places almost every week. This weekend is more than likely called for rain though, but next week should be a pretty good time. Shoot me a PM if you ever want to meet up w/us....

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

well i can put alitte insight to this. i had the car posted in sig. and one time on the way back from work i was being followed by a bight set of HIDs? i was like wtf and went 10 under and he still didnt pass me so i went the other route and floored it(turned off the gov(have a switch)) he followed sute. after way past 115( thats as far as my guage goes) i was leaving him. afer a few miles later we came to a stop. it was a gti golf he was very surprised and said he was doing 130ish and was nowhere near catching me. then i said its only a 305 and i moved on.

half a year later i got a new job and just so happened to work with that guy. he said he had severaL mods to it including flashed/tuned ecu, CAI, exhaust, and i think some internal work. but im not sure. it was a very hot car and i just walked away from him AT HIGH SPEED that was all my tbi was good for lol i even have taken some GTs for a run past 90. so i would say ask for a highway race lol

BUT MAKE SURE YOURE TIRES ARE IN GOOD SHAPE BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT. NOT TO SOUND LIKE A KILL JOY JUST GIVING ADVICE.
I CANT SAY DONT DO IT BECAUSE NEW DRIVERS WILL ALWAYS DO THINGS THAT "EXPERIENCED" DRIVERS WOULD NOT

Re: 3rd Gens vs. Volkswagen

There's a lot of different types of motors for these Jetta's and Golfs, most of which are in the low 100hp range. My brother has a 96 Golf with the 2.0 I4...not sure which motor it is, 115hp or 150hp (16 valve). They are light and fast, but still FWD. You should be ok with your 305 tbi as long as they have the weaker economy motors and no mods.

Golf Mk2 53 hp - 210 hp (GS limited edition)
Golf Mk3 59 hp - 188 hp (VR6)

Jetta Mk2 59 hp - 134 hp
Jetta Mk3 63 hp - 172 hp (VR6)
