Thirdgen Race... me? Yes really!

Alright, so I'm not sure if I have ever posted a race on this board, I usually just drop my 0.02! Well the other day, I actually got into a little scuffle with (go figure) a thirdgen. Now I do not condone street racing, and its a very very rare occasion I actually do it. Since I had a little encounter, which included a Thirdgen, I figured I would toss it up here, and take the abuse I'm sure it will get.

Disclaimer: Here are the details before the story. I was driving a 2001 Audi A6 with a 2.7T and a 6-speed. The car is bone stock with 18" wheels and tires. The thirdgen I raced was a faded red Camaro. NO idea the year, NO idea the motor, definately an auto, looked to be in fair condition (lots of sand and salt out there, so it's hard to say around this time of year). So with that said, here is how things went...

So here I am, shortly after topping off the tank driving back to my condo. It was cold out, but nice. I was in a semi rural area with some traffic lights, and roads in the 35-50 mph range. I get to a light ready to make a turn, and I peer into the rear view mirror. A red Camaro slides in behind me with a younger guy driving it (mid 20s, maybe?). He has his signal on as well, heading for the same direction. I take my turn and begin down the two lane 45 mph road. I cruise up to the speed limit (possibly 50 mph) and make my way. I again check the mirrors and the Camaro is now a car back in the other lane riding at my speed. Noone in front of or behind us, strangely. We approach a light, which changes to yellow. We both slow and come to a stop. I glance over, and surprisingly get a look from the Camaro owner. Neither of us motioned, said anything, revved, or made any indication of a race, but I think we were on the same page (just to have some fun). I realized the road we were on had some sand on it, and although knew this would help me a ton, figured it didn't matter!

A couple of seconds before the light hit, I brought the RPMs up to about 3500-4000. At the crack of green (I think running MANY times down the track on a pro tree helps out some) I slip the clutch (even with AWD in these cars, you have to slip the clutch, they bog hard) out and get off the line well. I heard the thirdgen next to me (possibly had an exhaust, it was fairly loud) launch, but did not hear him spin (sandy roads don't lend themselves to tires screaching). My guess is he spun some as by the top of first he was visible in my drivers side mirror. I powershifted 2nd gear (my A4 HATED this, and would bog very hard and cut power, but this car doesnt seem to mind) and approaching the top of 2nd noticed he had dropped back another car length or so (hard to say for sure how many back, maybe a few at this point). I hit third decently hard and let off (probably only slightly above the now 50 mph speed limit.). The thirdgen came up on to me after this and the owner gave another look. It was a half surprised, half "one more chance look". Little did he realize, another grace from above would give us a red light.

We sat there at another light ready to go. This time both prepared, he had the car stalled up on the converter (NO idea the RPM, 1500 maybe?) and knowing there was a little playing room I brought the revs up to 4500-5000. Light hit and I hesitated a second to see what that would do. Amazingly the thirdgen spun a tiny bit, and then hooked and went. In the short time that is first gear he jumped, I caught him door to door, and on the 2nd gear shift walked past him. This race was definately gonna go further than the last. Through 2nd gear I walked him slowely, where I hit third hard. Through the 3rd gear pull things got worse for him, I walked another car or more and could now see him in the center rear view mirror. I ran to the top of 3rd, hit 4th and ran the car up a little more (still pulling on him). The race was obviousely over at this point...

After this my turn came up, I glanced and waved and got a nice wave back. No hostility, no hatred, maybe a little shock for the thirdgen owner, but all in all a fun couple of runs. I would have liked to know what kind of thirdgen this was, but my guess would be an auto TPI car. I'm 99% sure it was not an L98, but with all the crap from the roads on the car, I can't really remember any obvious designation as to what it was...

Sorry for being long winded. I thought you guys might like to enjoy the story. Before you attack me, do a little research on the A6 with the 2.7T and the 6-speed, these cars are NO slouches!

Plus the guys who raced in the initial post probably werent going much over 75 mph at the end of it?

I think the A6 is on par performance wise with a good running l98 thirdgen. I think in better conditions the outcome would be slightly different, with the audi still taking the win. Good kill, its always good to have a little fun.

My guess is your right, I have heard of mid 14s for the A6 in the configuration of the one I was driving. I'm almost sure the car I raced was not an L98, but most likely an LB9 car... Again that is a guess, I can't tell thirdgen motor options by exterior looks!

Good race. I bet that 6 speed is fun with AWD! Sounds like you had some fun and good race.

Well, my response to that is that that's enough to beat a 5.0 fox body too, despite your wild claims of bone stock 5.0's running 13's.

So uhh, what's YOUR response to that?!?

nice kill.. sorry guys but my heart lies with german autos even though ive owned 3 third gens.. the 2,7t while not being too pissed stock is nothing to toy with and dont even think about trying to run a 350 tpi even with mods agains audis 2.7t s6 trim the s and rs lines from audi is audis way of saying "our 4 doors make muscle cars look slow" but anyway very good post 25th detail wasnt too bad for me it helps get all the clarification out right at the start with no questions asked.

Re: Thirdgen Race... me? Yes really!

An Audi, even with an l98 is not out of reach, these cars are 20years old, and maintaince does a lot. Great story and good kill, you seem like me. I don't condone street racing, But I still did a pull to 110 on the freeway a few months ago against a 5.0 at 3am, Neither of us realized mow fast we were going. I looked down first and hit the brakes hard, Bout 1/2 second later so did he. Haha...

Ummm... I didn't race a 5.0 Mustang with the Audi, I raced a thirdgen. I wouldn't know how I stacked up against a stock 5.0, unless I raced one. Unlike most, I rely on actual races, outcomes or track times to verify things. So to say the Audi would beat a stock 5.0, I wouldn't until I raced and beat one or had some track numbers (our stock 5.0 went 14.2, so the Audi would need to run that for me to start making "claims"). To say it beats a stock thirdgen (whatever the motor was), I can say that in this instance it did.

My response is, your digging real deep to try and put down a car that had NOTHING to do with this race.

Keep going though, your only making yourself look like a fool!

Can't fight you with the looks, thats opinion, but yes ours went 14.2 bone stock. Seen 13.9 but that car had an off road Hpipe and optional factory 3.08 gears! That same fox that went 14.2, went 13.31 with an exhaust, 3.55 gears and a pair of tires (no other mods), and now runs 9.90s @ 135+ with an all motor 351 and a 4-speed!

No, no, i'll be the first to say my car is slow. I just wasn't sure what to say... I don't know much if anything about Audis, but after reading your post i took the time to look at some of their stats. I was realllly hoping you were gonna be posting about a race in your mustang though . I would've raced your Audi, and I would have lost, and i would have had fun doing so, lol.

just checked out a quick review about the A6. Looks good to me, nice car! Not offended about the thirdgen kill by the way. lol.

These cars out there are what they are. If you dont like getting beat up by newer foreign cars... spend some money on speed parts, take over where gm left off.

Here is some facts:
2001 Audi A6
Horsepower: 250 hp
Torque: 258 ft-lbs.
Curb Weight: 3759 lbs (M)
Vs.
Faded Red Camaro (unknown year)
(Going for a guess of a 305 stock used a 1990 as year)
Horsepower: 230 hp
Torque: 245 ft-lbs.
Curb Weight: 3400 lbs (A)
Nice race.

Nice race.

Camaros about 3400 lbs. Thats what my stock L98 89 Iroc weighed. Chances are it was a 170-190 hp 305. Just not gonna get it done.

Mine is an automatic, North Carolina car one owner before me, from some old guy named Otis! It's solid, still has original paint, will try to post some pix eventually. Got really lucky, needs a front tranny seal and I am re-doing the heads on it. Should be alot of fun cruisin' it this summer.
Fastback would be the proper terminology, this one is rated @ 375HP, only the 4 speeds were rated @ 390hp...... Your right what in the name of #$@% is he talking 'bout????

The Message board gods show their dislike. I like it this way better, one less 1/5 GB of arguments off the server.

Re: Thirdgen Race... me? Yes really!

Moderation.

Thread has been cleaned up a bit. If your post is missing, take that as a sign. Stick to the facts that deal with the topic at hand. Keep the off-topic, personal, comments and insults out. Stop carrying around baggage from one thread to the next - which has been ruining some threads. If things can't stay that way, threads will get locked, and if that doesn't work, banning or no-access to this subforum will result per user if it can't be kept civil and mature.

You all have to share the forum. Please use some common sense and maturity when posting in this forum. This is not a free-for-all area.

Most of the posts that were soft-deleted added nothing to the direct topic at hand, some violated our rules/guidelines, and most had no positive input to allow the thread to continue.

Thanks.

thats what i love about this board in particular. its called theoretical and street racing for a reason.
there is more bs here than anywhere else on TGO.

yeah, im still mad that i didn't get that car.
oh well.

i imagine with some slicks and a bit of tweaking and weight loss, it could have been nasty quick. on the track that is.
i dont like the idea of getting my car crushed.

Re: Thirdgen Race... me? Yes really!

Good to see the thread cleaned up, althought there are 3 or 4 more posts that could be removed, but I guess I can live with them.

14.7 sec (15.1 sec. auto): This is what I find online for the 2001 A6 2.7T with the 6-speed and the auto. Now take into consideration that number was posted by a magazine driver (we all know they don't get the best 1/4 mile times from these cars) so I would think 14.5 wouldn't be too tough! Even running a 305 TPI car would be a good drivers race, a TBI car would be a walk in the park, and an L98 would probably have the edge, but would be a bumper/bumper run!

I don't think getting beat by a 4 door car is that bad, there are a LOT of quick ones out there. 14s are nothing nowadays.

getting beat by a 4 door car is not cool, esp. in a 3rd gen or any v8 camaro for that matter
i had some bmw *** trying to race me in my ss a few days back.
i had to lay down some lsx churned rwhp on him, mostly a rooster tail

Hmm, I think fast sedans are bada$$. Something about having all that power and luxury in a nice looking package! They can work well as a car to take the friends out with, or duke it out at a stoplight.

Re: Thirdgen Race... me? Yes really!

I would belive it. prob spun alot more than you think but once the thirdgen got traction and some speed going the a6 should have done just what you said and never looked back. a stock 5.0 running almost flat 14's I still call BS but what ever you are awsome driver if thats true and you should see what you can do with a 5-speed lb9

anyway good kill Im sure you knew it was gonna happen that way

Re: Thirdgen Race... me? Yes really!

I would say that, but I have seen a few in the low 14s, and my friends 13.9 with an h-pipe.

I also drive "alright" .
