Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

the speedo on mine goes to 85. but its the double needle so the other side is metric. i topped out the US through the metric and to 15 mph. the math would say 185 but i highly doubt that. definately not calibrated for that. lol

Ha! I was going to say, That's VERY impressive for a Streetable FBody. So, what do you think you were actually doing?

that was years ago i honestly have no idea, if i had to guess maybe 130. it was a nearly stock LU5 305, but then again 2.93 gears and the overdrive 700R4 transmission is quite condusive to top end speed. who knows.

Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

i had mine at 108 (according to the speedo, but that's not even correct because of the oversized rear tires). i honestly don't know how fast i was going. i really thought my old 3.1 would just die off by about 90mph

Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

'87 Camaro Sport Coupe
built 350
Iroc wheels with Yokohama 245/50 A509 ZR16 tires 25.8 inches tall
700r4 trans in third gear 1:1
9 bolt rear with 3.27 gears
7000 RPM = 164.31 MPH

This was back in 1997 when I was much younger and dumber. The car felt good at this speed even without ground effects. I stayed in it thru third and noticed I was at 7000 and shut it down. The speedo only went to 85, so I didn't know how fast I was going until much later when I calculated it.

Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

137+mph '89 GTA stock
Auto L98 on BF Goodrich comp/ta's
250lb passenger - I know I know
Back in '97 if I recall correctly. The last time I checked the speedo (my attention was more focused on the road for obvious reasons) I read 137. I maybe went a couple mph more, couldn't have been much though. I didn't red line it but was very close and I barely felt any more pull. Also It was vibrating like hell. Stock drive shaft vibration? Other than the vibration it felt stable, as in I didn't feel I was going to lose control of the car. And yeah, I did get put in handcuffs.

Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

I might get flamed for saying this but... After seeing the lights in my rear view mirror and pretty much knowing they were for me I actually waited for the trooper on the over pass after the off ramp. I was coming up to an exit and told my brother "I better get off here in case there's a cop looking for me". I was half kidding though when I said that and as I was on the off ramp I glanced at my rear view and saw those unmistakable lights flashing quite a ways away. I was like "aww ----" I then continued on the off ramp, made a left turn and parked on the overpass. The trooper parked behind me and called me out of my car at gunpoint. He then had me walk to his patrol car and handcuffed me. A little bit later back up arrives. I felt bad though because I put my brother in that circumstance. I was searched, my brother was searched, my car got searched, I got searched again. I don't think I have to mention that it wasn't a pleasant experience ... not pleasant at all lol.

That makes no sense? Even if you were speeding they wouldn't of held you at gun point. You must have been wanted for something.

Well I was and no I wasn't wanted for anything. To this day I'm very surprised as hell I wasn't actually put in jail. First off the speed I was clocked at. Second - the plates the car had on it were off my Mazda. Third - I didn't have my proof of insurance with me. Fourth - I still had my California Driver's License (I'm In Mo.) After my brother and I and my car were searched I think the trooper didn't see us as a threat because he took the cuffs off me and had me sit in his patrol car out of the cold while my brother was being questioned. He asked me why I was going so fast and pointed to his radar display and said "that's the speed I clocked you at" I was honest and told him I didn't have a reason and I know it was a very stupid thing to do. I don't know if he clocked me slowing down or speeding up though because his display read 124 I was very apologetic to the officer/trooper and to my brother on the way home because I sincerely felt bad and I thought I was going to jail. He asked me why I stopped and I told him that I saw his lights as I was getting off the highway and knew they were for me. He told me that if I hadn't stopped and kept going he wasn't going to risk chasing me me through town. I know he called for back up though because only a couple minutes after he had me in cuffs 2 patrol cars came, one was a city cop the other was an unmarked patrol car, don't know if city or state patrol. I don't know why I didn't get jailed. I think maybe me stopping for him when still well ahead of him had something to do with it? I know I went 137mph at least. I only have proof of 124mph because of one of the tickets received (Exceeded uniform maximum speed limit); driving 124mph when limited to 60mph. I don't know if things would've ended up differently if I had been clocked at the higher speed and I'm happy not knowing. It's bittersweet though because I only have proof of 124.

Yes, VERY lucky. At my court date I was told to get a Mo. license and proper plates and insurance for my car. And come back. I don't remember exactly how much I was fined but I ended up with < a $400 fine a 15 day suspended sentence and a 3 year probation. Man, I was a nervous wreck for a while after that thinking any little infraction was going to result in my butt getting locked up. I asked my brother what the officers had said and asked him. Some things they asked him were what my name was, who he was, where we were going where we were coming from etc. When my car was searched a bunch of lighters, some of those scented car cakes, and a small car air freshener spray bottle were found. My brother was asked why I had so many lighters and air fresheners and he told them that I smoked cigarettes. Which I did at that time. He was asked if I did any drugs and my brother said no just cigarettes. Maybe that's why my car's interior panels were taken off during the search. All I had in the car was a pack of cigs. Before you guys get upset no, I have never smoked in my car only when I was outside of it. And as for the air fresheners, I just like my car smelling of cherries

Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

With my old 305tbi I hit 132 on SR 32 in Adams County, Ohio. At the time i had a 3.42 but that gear went out lol, i had it pegged at 5700 rpms and it was still going lmao, poor motor.

With my new built 358 I hit 160mph down the new 129 highway racing my friends mustang Gt. I left him in the dust at 110 lmao. he runs 13.4s and i left him like he was still. I still had my stock 700r4 and 2.72 gears. I think beating him is how i blew both of my head gaskets

You mean car. I did a motor swap. And why would you feel bad for them lol? I ordered cheap head gaskets anyway, they were bound to go out. So i got my heads re surfaced and WAYYY better head haskets. My car loves me :-)

You can bypass them pretty easy with a little splicing knowledge and a Schematic.

OK You guys doing these high spead runs at night are really dumb, Speeding is OK just not when you cant see FAR AHEAD, Animals will stop in the middle of a road or cross for any reason, last weekend coming from the track we saw the truck ahead of us hit a dog, it was chassing a pig/hog. I know cause I talked to the dogs owner the next day as he buried his dog on the side of the road, right where I moved it to, we turned around to see if it was still alive but it wasnt breathing, he was hog hunting that night. The truck lost a fender well and the plastic was on the side of the road, my car would have had way more damage and we were doing 60. I cant understand why you would do this at night you have no chance to see the COPS either and they use instant ON radar so detectors do no good. SO GO FAST JUST USE YOUR BRAIN.

i prefer night time, at 3am there is NO ONE on the road, so you only endanger yourself, the freeways here are lit up well, 6 lanes wide with concrete walls on either side, and flat for long enough to get up to top speed and back down without giving the po-po a place to hide. also, no animals on the freeways!

^ Yeah, Animals are what really scare me, Including Dumb Pedestrians... (They act like they don't see you, so you won't see them, Right? Ugh...) Cops don't scare me nearly as much as the thought of a Crazy Deer...

The truck lost a fender well and the plastic was on the side of the road, my car would have had way more damage and we were doing 60. I cant understand why you would do this at night you have no chance to see the COPS either and they use instant ON radar so detectors do no good. SO GO FAST JUST USE YOUR BRAIN.
well once that animal or persons hears the roar of true American POWER they will move pretty fast and why wouldn't u go fast at night in the day a cop can see u speed from like 4 miles a way and by 1 mile he has ur plates car color make and model where is at night he be lucky to tell if if it was a car that passed him and no matter where and how the cop they can't catch a good drive for example the police crown vic a 250hp so called chipped V8 that can do 140 top and takes 21.45sec to hit a 100 that i have personal many a time drove circles around .... and the new dodge charger is a little better 15.14 to get to 100 in a straight line. the turth is police cant handle a good 3gen and driver
they have instant on i have instant GONE lol

in al if you hit a dog you can sue the owner for damages the dog does to you car, same for cows etc etc, i guess if you hit a deer you got to sue God

i got my strech of the road that a long long bridge, lol so no animals or anything, plus its light up like day time and there is only a few people out there late at night.....also always got one better than the radar det. get on the CB before and see if any cops are seen on the bridge....dont do it to often dont really have anything to prove, i know what my car can do, its been a long time since i wound a car out....i really want to go to the salt flats now thats an idea

i know a cop out here, in our area the main patrol cars are govn at 118, the SUV's are 104....but running is stupid

Wouldn't it also be irresponsible of the dogs owner, or any livestock owner for that matter to let the animal roam free and be a safety hazard to drivers? Fact is not everyone reacts to an animal running onto the road in front of their vehicle the same way. Some people might , for example, swerve immediately to avoid driving into the animal and end up in a ditch or into oncoming traffic. I DO feel bad for the pup getting killed but most of the blame belongs to its owner IMO. There are such things as fences. I dunno, What do you guys think?

Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

I agree, Hamster. I hit a big fat cat at the top end of a street race one time. It surprisingly did absolutely nothing to the Camaro. I must have hit it with the wheel. But the poor thing was smeared down the road for about a 1/8 mile. I didn't know a cat could bleed that much. At least it was a quick end for him. His owners (if he had any) should have kept him in the house and off the highway.

Here's my question... why is this such a big deal? Smoking in a ThirdGen? I bet half of us TGO members smoke in our cars. I from time to time do in mine (don't yell at me lol). But seriously... our cars are old, they don't smell the greatest anyways! I have three friends with ThirdGens... all of them are smokers. And they all smoke in their cars.

Disgusting, i can't stand smoking. It smells terrible, its really bad for you, and its expensive.... i don't understand why ppl do it..... but anyways most i have ever gone was about 130 on about half throttle after my 350 tbi/roadmaster ecm swap. (had to get into fourth somehow) so half throttle is all it got and it hit 130 fairly quick. Speaking of cops i outran the cops one time in my Caprice L99, for being 4000+ lbs. its moves just fine.... Crown vics are worthless. I was in town so it made for an easy getaway, just bolted out of town and went the long way home. In the Caprice i was screwing with my friend in his 1995 Dodge ram 318 5 spd and going down this one road i had the car up against the speed limiter at 108, Got back to his house and heard on his scanner the road we were on and that there was a call for street racing. hahaha

I used to have one of those L99 Caprices. It was the slowest V8 I had ever driven. I got rid of that crappy motor, with it's **** poor torque, and dropped a 350 in that car. Then on, it drove like it should. By the way Aaron, I too am in the chastised boat of smokers. I tend to just not pay attention to the nay sayers comments.

On 2nd note. 115 last night in my 91 RS.

Well apparently you had a junk L99 motor, i find it to be quite peppy for what it is. It makes decent torque, its not **** poor. And its not a crappy motor, its quite reliable and quite a good design. Maybe do some research before you trash a car/engine you apparently know nothing about. You probably owned a L03 5.0 caprice. The L99 has good power and runs very well, moves the 4k+ caprice quite well. I have taken some rice boys in the beast. Sure it won't hold a candle to the LT1 caprice/Camaro but its good for being a 4.3L V8. Plenty of passing power.....

O and another thing the L99 makes more power than your L03 does so you can't call it "the slowest V8 you had ever driven." b/c it can keep up with an L03 Camaro, it kept up with that 95' Ram and that ram and i raced when i had an L03 in my car and we were even until 80 when we let off. And i mean DEAD even.

And lastly, again smoking is pointless

Hell yeah man!!! Lol! Marlboro Reds for life! Lol... plus the fact that I am 17 (for four more days) and it's illegal for me to smoke... the safest place to smoke is in your car driving! Just don't blow any stop signs or speed and you'll never get caught!!! That and my parents would cut my fingers off if they caught me smoking.

Excuse me, but my Caprice has low miles, is in good shape, and is not a dog. I simply was hugely disappointed with the 265 CI v8 that it originally had. Also, the L03 in my RS is far from stock.

I just saw that now... now that I'm curious... I wonder if the mods in interior would allow a "Do you smoke in your ThirdGen?" thread...

Okay I made one...

We'll see if it lasts or not... I think it will be interesting! Hopefully no fighting. Back to topic!

I had my 91' Firebird with the LO3 and T-5 to 110-120 a couple times before I sold it. Now I have a 94' Caprice 9C1, haven't been able to try that one yet, only had it to like 95 and it was just warming up, would smoke my 91' off the map easy. I also have an 87' project car, only had that to like 1, maybe 2, mph while loading it on a dolly, lol.

Re: whats the fastest you have gone in your thirdgen?

unfortunately I've only had mine up to about 5 while moving it around my driveway lol (Car isn't registered/insured/inspected yet.....couple more weeks!!!!). I don't plan on going nuts with it though. I'll take it as fast as I need to on the thruway. I know what it's capable of, and I do expect that I will wanna see what it really can do someday, but I wouldn't have the ***** to find out top speed, unless I was on a test track or something.

Oh yeah, my car has never been smoked in, and it smells great!! It's a 92 and smells better than my 02 Nissan Xterra lol. Nice and clean and fresh every time I sit in it. My 89, which sits in a garage and does nothing, doesn't smell bad either.

Cars that are smoked in smell terrible. Not to mention resale value is hit hard by it....

agreed. Smoking in general is terrible IMO, especially in cars, where the smell seeps into the fabric and everything and the scent never comes out. It does lower the value too. I would hate buying a car knowing that the PO was a smoker

THe smell will never come completely out unless you replace your interior. Smells stain like red wine stains white carpet. Why are you defending something that is really uncool to do?
