Street racing: 74 vehicles impounded
ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA 9/28/08-- Police from 12 different agencies - including Azusa, Irwindale, Baldwin Park, West Covina and Riverside - cracked down early Sunday on a crowd allegedly gathered for street racing in the Pomona Valley.
The grant-funded task force of officers surprised more than 180 people at 12:45 a.m. today when they converged on the crowd in the 5200 block of East Airport Drive, according to Ontario police Detective Jeff Higbee.
Officers detained and ticketed 184 people for being spectators, and arrested three alleged racers, including one who acted as a flagger to signal race starts, Ontario police Sgt. David McBride said in a phone interview.
An estimated total of 74 vehicles were impounded due to the drivers and passengers being detained and cited, Higbee said.
More than a quarter of those detained and cited were under age 18, Higbee said. A total of 47 youngsters were also cited for being in violation of a 10 p.m. curfew that applies to anyone under age 18 who is out without a parent or legal guardian, Higbee said.
Popular street racing culture and Hollywood interpretations of the lifestyle are founded in part on the reality of illegal street racing in the vast mall parking lots of the Inland Empire and Ontario International Airport. Many participants get thrills from playing cat-and-mouse with police on nights when patrols are light.
But sometimes speed contests in the Ontario area end in deaths, including those of innocents who were not racing, police said.
Funding for the multi-agency crackdown today was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Well at least they were racing in semi empty streets. I think its bs that spectators were arrested/cited though. They need to have actual legitimate drag strips available so people can safely race. Granted it wont stop those doing it just to spite law enforcement. I am guilty of street racing but I always make sure the conditions are right: Empty street, know the area, well lit if I don't know the area, and nobody in my car with me.

I agree on the spectator part its bs. Street racing is dumb no matter what the conditions are, anything can happen. If you crashed do you really think he would stick around and get the street racing ticket. I quit street racing years ago when i figured that out.

It's a scary idea getting you car impounded or hurting someone street racing. You definitely have to weigh in the pros and cons of doing such activities.

Should take the millions of dollars cities spend on street racing task forces each year and build some f^cking tracks.
State & local Gov. - always curing the symtom, instead of correcting the root problem. There are what....two 1/8 mile track and one 1/4 track for all of SoCal.

I don't personally street race myself, because a few years back I did, and got nailed and have paid the price in insurance premiums.
However, I am in agreement with whoever said that there need to be more dragstrips around (especally in southern California with the poplulation being what it is..). you guys have what, LACR, Pomona, and what else?
Then again, the Government and land developers have greater funds, and will ultimately win out.

Horrible justification, seeing as how the older muscle cars don't handle near as well as even a stock Civic does.

LACR closed last year when the strip mine next door (who owned the land) decided they needed the land the drag strip was on for its minerals.
Carlsbad closed in 2005 when the development next door (who owned the land) decided they wanted to build more industrial complexes and a road.
We have California Speedway which is 1/4 mile but open less than once a month. We have Famoso in Bakersfield which is open less than once a month. We have Irwindale 1/8 mile open on Thursdays. And we have Barona 1/8 mile open Saturdays.
I think the next closest 1/4 mile is Las Vegas.
