My 1992 Firebird vs 1st gen Audi TT

I raced my friend who has a first gen Audi TT quattro with the 1.8l turbo. Its bone stock and has higher mileage [110,000 i think]. Its a 2001. Its manual trans.

From a roll of about 40 he took me by about 3/4 a car length.

From about 5 it was real even, with me gaining slightly to about 40, and him gaining til about 80 and then evening out with me slightly ahead by 105.

Re: My 1992 Firebird vs 1st gen Audi TT

I had a friend with an Audi TT Turbo, same engine, manual... and that thing ran like a raped ape... he had a few mods, but it seems faster than my 91 TPI 5 Speed, Hooker 2055's, Flowmaster 3" exhaust, etc... Though we never raced...

Depends on his mods, simple stuff net big gains. My friend added a diverter valves, chip, and intake and picked up 35+ whp (about 20-22% power increase).

Well my friends has higher miles, so idk if its running in tip top shape. And its totally stock. But id recken you would take at least a stock Audi TT turbo easily if i was running nearly neck and neck with him.

My cousin as the turbo 1.8T AWD Audi, mostly stock, and we race around quite a bit, usually we're pretty even. Here is a thread from this summer with some of our races...

Was it a 6 speed or 5 speed manual? The 6 has 225hp and the 5 has 180. But I think the Quattro comes standard with the 6 speed/225hp combo...

Its the 225hp version, its a 6spd. Only mods at the time were a lightweight flywheel and crazy stage four clutch - I drove it, it feels pretty quick, but race after race were are dead even.

Yeah sorry my question was directed to you.

Im almost certain you could only get the 5 speed with FWD, and in which case it only makes 180hp.

Im really not 100% sure. All I know is its stick [pretty sure its 5-speed] and that it says Quattro on it, lol.
If its the FWD 180hp one, then that would make sense as to how I kept up with him so good.

I thought the 250hp TT came with the VR6 engine?
Because I know my friend has the 1.8L turbo

The first gen TTs came with 2 different awd power plants, 180hp NA 1.8L, and the tubro 225hp 1.8L. The VR6 powered TT you speak of is the 3.2, which came along a few years later. 5spd was the only transmission for the FWD and AWD non-turbo cars, the 6spd came only with the AWD turbo.

Hmm, you can hear his turbo though, so I know its the turbod one. So I guess it is a 6-speed then, I must have been mistaken.

*BZZZZTTTT* incorrect sir.

The 180hp version is a 1.8 turbo which is based off the K03 turbo and possesses a single side mount intercooler. The 225hp version is based off of the 1.8 turbo with a K04-20 turbo, more boost, twin side mount intercoolers and a more aggressive chip.

The 5-speed came in FWD and 180hp AWD versions.

The 6-speed ONLY came in the 225 AWD versions.

There you got the info straight. The two different motors do have a relatively big difference in acceleration though.
