305 > 377! *reaction time is EVERYTHING*

last friday i managed to make it down to South Georgia Motorsports Park in Adel, GA. i got there late and only managed to make two passes. on my second pass, i pulled into the staging lanes to see a very clean blue 1980 camaro. i talked with the guy for a little while and we decided to run the cars. with as small of a car count as we had, we could pretty much pick and choose what we wanted to do, so we told the guy running the lanes that we wanted to run each other.

i had made one pass earlier already and my car wasn't working as well as i'd have liked it too. i found out later (the next morning)that my timing was off by over 4* initial. i normally set it at 18* and it was at only 14*. which explained my slightly slower ET's. i wasn't going to let my ET's being a little slow discourage me though.

anyhow, we lined 'em up. i got outta the whole WAY before him. my .026 light to his .32x light. i et'd him to the 1/8 mile markers(8.17 to his 8.19) but i could see him closing in on me quickly. we went through the 1/4 mile traps right before he caught me so my win light came on! my 12.92 @ 103 to his 12.83 @ 105 (which just happens to be his personal best on motor). i really wished i had set the timing before i made those passes cause i'd have schooled him big time. even though my ET was .09 slower, i still beat him to the stripe by .266. reaction time is EVERYTHING!

come to find out, his is a standard bore 350 with a 3.75" stroke (377ci) with brodix race right cylinder heads and lots of extra goodies. only thing i had to my advantage is that i was a solid 800lbs lighter than he was, my converter is a little looser and i got some crazy gears in comparison (my 4.56's to his 3.73) we were both on drag radials. my M/T's to his BFG's

all in all i had a blast running this guy. it was probably one of the closest races i've had in a LONG time. he was a little embarasses that a 305 just put a smack down on his high $$ race motor, but he still came over to my pits afterwords to shoot the breeze for 30 mins or so. good race, and EXCELLENT sportsmanship.

Was his car stock body? I know if the same motor in the 80 was in yours he might go .4-.7 quicker in out lighter third gens. You should have talked him into getting one and we would have another TGO member!!!

ah, his car was really nice, i didn't want to tear him away from it.

weather was OK friday night, drove through the rain to get there though. it rained all day saturday and they called the race before one car went down the track. no biggie. the money is going to good use buying my school books and whatnot.

Nice run. Thats pretty good for a 305 especially! Those are some crazy gears you have there my friend.

My question is this though. Why was he trapping so slow? With 3.73's and running that time that he would have been roughly 110 mph give or take. Only because he should have been pulling hard up top with that type of set-up.

Either way good run. Kinda makes me wish I kept my Gen III Camaro.

But going to look at getting another First gen tonight. Already have a 69 and I found a guy with a 68 and a 67!

he's got a lot of motor. but yea, you've got an aerodynamic advantage and like you said, "a solid 800 lbs" of weight advantage. i like this race because it was so close. i mean, if he had a little less weight then that 80 would have smoked you, and if your timing was back up to 18*you might have smoked him. very nice race.

Re: 305 > 377! *reaction time is EVERYTHING*

with the timing set at 18* i've been 12.66 @ 103, the difference was all 60' times. i know i'd have demolished him if that was the case cause the air was good enough for some low 12.6x or high 12.5x's. this weekend i'm gonna lock out the distributor and start playing with it starting at 32* and work my way up to 42* in 2* increments.
