LG4's weekend action: Audi TT225, 240SX

Had some interesting encounters at our local cruise spot this weekend. My cousin comes up every weekend, but finally has a new stage 4 clutch and lightweight flywheel in his Audi TT, the 225hp turbo 1.8liter awd version. Prior to this weekend, his clutch was too weak to even run from a roll, but now things are all broke in and ready to rock.

First, I gotta say, the TT is a pretty cool car. I took it for a drive, the stage 4 clutch is pretty wild to say the least, coupled with a lightweight flywheel and 4 cylinder lack of torque/boost at low rpms makes you really have to think about your driving. The clutch is nice though, it has a very very fast, but smooth engadgement. To far down on the pedal for my tastes, but to each his own. I was very surprised with the motor, its got seriously torque. Audi says it'll make peak torque of about 210ft/lbs from 2200rpm - 5500rpms, they arn't kidding, that thing will pull in any gear. That lag isn't too bad, I'm used to light-switch V8 torque, but it wasn't bad. Top end was pretty good, but it felt more like a mid-range machine than anything, probably just the phenominal midrange makes the top seem like less than it is. Transmission was pretty notchy, my old SVT Contour was butter compaired to that thing.

Anyways, we got lined up, along with a Nissan 240SX that accompanies my cousin up to Syracuse frequently. I'd never run the 240 either, it's owner didn't have a license for a while, so his buddy would drive it, but never really get on it. The 240 had the SR2.0 swap, and was running about 12psi through a pretty aggressive clutch and a weight reduced body. Had an open exhaust, the sound of the turbo through the exhaust was awesome. I stalled to 2000rpm, the TT was at about 5000rpm for the launch, and the 240SX was really low. Light when green, and I spun very lightly through most of first, you know the kind where just barely missed the dead hook, but are pretty much right on, skating just a little sideways throught the intersection, and smacking second gear at 5400rpm with strong bark of the tires and a little jump to the right. It was a pretty solid launch, as the TT left with just a touch of wheel spin, his rear tire was even with my front as we both went to second, I pull just even with him at his gear change. (And these kids think an automatic is the slow way to shift) The 240SX bogged quite badly, but at about the middle-top of second gear at 55mph the Audi and I were still dead even when the 240 came roaring by just as I was lifting out - its not worth a big ticket or somebodies life.

The TT and I play around quite a bit the next day, the two cars are very very even through 65mph, we never raced beyond those speeds. From a 30mph roll I could get ahead on the TT as it took a second to get into the boost, but from a dig he could hole-shot me by just a little bit, and I think with some practice on the new clutch he's be able to launch even better. But I was happy, the TT is a 14.6 ish car, and I could stay with him... always trying to benchmark the LG4 till it actually makes it to the track.

I wouldn't say they were super fast, mid 14's maybe. The car is probably about 225hp, with pretty health torque. The combo runs as good as it does because of a good 3.73 rear, a 2500rpm stall, and a solid hook, it probably 1.9's the 60ft on street tires, it out-launches a lot of cars. Not a ton of power, I bet the mph in the 1/4 mile is only like 93mph.

That clutch and flywheel must add alot, because the one I raced was almost dead even with me.

Either that or my little 305 isn't all the fast... which is probably closer to the truth.

I bet my 305 is even slower and I still held up well.
